The TCDD E5000, also known as the Eskişehir 5000, is a class of four-axle electric mainline locomotives designed and manufactured in Turkey for TCDD Transport by TÜRASAŞ, with research and engineering contributions from the TÜBİTAK Rail Transportation Technologies Institute (RUTE). The 5 MW locomotives are intended for both freight and passenger trains and have a maximum speed of 140 km/h (87 mph).[1][2]

The prototype was presented in April 2023. A contract for 95 locomotives was signed in March 2024, and the first five series-production units were handed over in May 2025. By the end of 2025, 20 had been delivered; the Turkish Ministry of Transport reported that 30 had been completed by 20 August 2026.[3][4][5][6]

Development

The E5000 project followed Turkey's earlier TCDD E1000 electric locomotive prototype and sought to develop a more powerful electric locomotive for mainline duties. Istanbul Technical University records participation in an E5000 development project running from October 2017 to April 2022. In December 2017, TÜBİTAK described the programme as a collaboration involving its Marmara Research Center, Istanbul Technical University and TÜLOMSAŞ, the Eskişehir locomotive manufacturer subsequently incorporated into TÜRASAŞ.[7][8]

After prototype construction at Eskişehir, the locomotive was publicly presented on 18 April 2023 under the name Eskişehir 5000. Its research and development programme included domestically designed traction motors and converters, a traction transformer, auxiliary power equipment and a train control and management system.[3][9]

Road testing of the locomotive took place in 2024. The Ministry of Transport announced in October of that year that the prototype had reached 140 km/h (87 mph) during tests at the Hasanbey railway facilities near Eskişehir.[10]

Design and equipment

The E5000 is a single-system electric locomotive for 1,435 mm (56.5 in) standard-gauge track electrified at 25 kV, 50 Hz AC. It has a Bo′Bo′ wheel arrangement, with four powered axles, and uses AC–AC electric traction. TÜRASAŞ specifies an output of 5,000 kW, a maximum speed of 140 km/h and a starting tractive effort of 300 kN. Its braking systems include pneumatic and dynamic brakes. A TÜRASAŞ technical catalogue gives a nominal locomotive weight of approximately 86 tonnes.[2][11]

Four three-phase asynchronous traction motors are fitted. TÜBİTAK RUTE lists an individual motor rating of 1,280 kW and identifies the traction motor as the TRACS-CM E5000 design. It also developed the locomotive's traction converters and train control and management system. TÜRASAŞ lists compatibility with ETCS Levels 1 and 2 in its product specifications.[12][9][2]

Production and deliveries

In March 2024, TÜRASAŞ and TCDD Transport signed an agreement for 95 Eskişehir 5000 locomotives to be manufactured at TÜRASAŞ's Eskişehir facilities. The first five locomotives were handed over to TCDD Transport during a ceremony at the Hasanbey Logistics Centre on 30 May 2025. Railway industry publications reported plans to deliver a further 15 by the end of 2025.[4][13][1]

The first 20 production locomotives had been completed and delivered by the end of 2025, according to a subsequent transport-ministry statement reported by Anadolu Agency. On 20 August 2026, the ministry announced that total production had reached 30 locomotives. The 95-unit contract remained in production at that date; the 30 completed locomotives should not be confused with the number confirmed as delivered or operating in regular service.[5][6]

Certification

The E5000 was developed to meet the European Union's Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI) requirements for railway rolling stock. Earlier development and delivery announcements described it as designed for, or compliant with, these standards. On 20 August 2026, Turkey's Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure publicly announced the completion of its TSI certification process and the presentation of the certificate to TÜRASAŞ. Certification was reported for the locomotive design; it should not be taken to establish that E5000 locomotives were already operating internationally.[6][2]
