TIER Mobility GmbH[edit]

Tier Mobility GmbH is a European shared micro-mobility provider with the mission to Change Mobility for Good. Based in Berlin, Germany, TIER plays a role in the ongoing transformation of transportation by helping cities reduceemissions and car congestion.TIER has provided over 25 million rides to date, surpassing 10 million rides less than one year since the start of business operations.[1][2] The company currently operates in 90+ cities across 11 countries, including global capitals Paris, London, Berlin and Dubai. [3]

Through its platform and focus on operations, TIER allows for the integration of external micro-mobility assets and participation with public transportation such as BVG and MVG, and other mobility providers such as SIXT, WHIM, Citymapper, and HSL.[4] [5] [6] [7]

The management team is composed of experienced entrepreneurs in Europe: Lawrence Leuschner (CEO & co-Founder), Matthias Laug (CTO & co-Founder) and Alex Gayer (CFO), Roger Hassan (COO), Matthias Tepel (CCO), Ashwini Chhabra (CPPO).[8]

History[edit]

TIER was founded in October 2018 by entrepreneurs Lawrence Leuschner (CEO), Matthias Laug (CTO) and Julian Blessin. It had its Series A round of funding in February 2019, raising $32 million from venture capital funds Northzone, White Star Capital, Point Nine, Speedinvest and Formula 1 world champion Nico Rosberg. [9][2]

In April 2019, TIER’s electric scooters reached 1 and 2 million rides.[10] [11]

In June 2019, TIER launched in their home market of Germany with 8 cities in one day (Berlin, Munich, Hamburg, Frankfurt Cologne, Münster, Düsseldorf, and Bonn). TIER’s electric scooters reached 3 million rides.[12]

In July 2019, TIER’s electric scooters reached 1 million rides in Germany alone.[13]

In September 2019, TIER surpassed 10 million electric scooter rides, less than one year since the start of business operations.[2] TIER was also recognised as one of LinkedIn's Top Startups for 2019 in Germany; TIER was ranked at No. 2 amongst the list of 25 startups. [14] TIER also adopted the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as their sustainability framework and committed to contributing to the Sustainable Development Goal 11 as well as SDGs 9, 12, 13, and 17. [15]

In October 2019, TIER launched operations with the TIER TWO, the industry’s first scooter with swappable batteries. The new technology enabled operations with electric vans and cargo bikes to quickly recover and replace empty batteries without relying on traditional, gas-powered vehicles.[16] The TIER TWO was custom-built for ride-sharing with more battery life for a longer range, a bigger front wheel, double suspension, a wider footboard, a more powerful and responsive engine, a double kickstand, and an integrated wireless phone charger. [17] TIER also launched myTIER, providing their e-scooters of an older generation a second life by making them available for ownership. [18]

In November 2019, at the Slush event' Future of Transportation' in Helsinki, CEO Lawrence Leuschner pledged TIER's commitment to being carbon-neutral from January 2020 onwards.[19]

In January 2020, TIER also acquired U.K. startup Pushme Bikes, a manufacturer of replaceable batteries and other mobility-related hardware.[17] TIER also became the first micromobility provider to go climate-neutral. [20]

In February 2020, TIER announced the joining of Moritz Werner as CCO and Roger Hassan as COO.[8] TIER also extended its Series B funding round over $100 million, up from $60 million disclosed in October. Additional debt and equity funding being provided by RTP Global (Moscow/New York), Novator (London) and a leading US debt fund, supplementing the initial closing of $60 million led by Mubadala Capital in October 2019. [17] At this time, TIER also acquired assets from Coup (companies), a now-bankrupt, Berlin electric moped scooter-sharing service. This resulted in TIER Mobility attaining roughly 5,000 e-mopeds as well as Coup’s charging infrastructure. [21]

In April 2020, TIER launched Commute with TIER and TIER Heroes - special offers for commuters and essential workers during times of COVID-19 and physical distancing.[22][23]

By May 2020, TIER became a multimodal service provider, successfully launching its e-moped service in Berlin, Munich and Cologne.[24] Later that month, TIER launched an integrated helmet solution via an in-house developed SmartBox with helmet recognition technology and foldable helmet.[25]

In August 2020, TIER successfully launched its Energy Network, in Europe, for e-scooters and all future TIER vehicles. The network consists of an in-house developed PowerBox and the company’s newest scooter, the TIER FOUR. The e-scooter contains a user-swappable battery that can be exchanged at charging stations (SwapSpots) found at shops and stores around the city. Users get free rides by swapping the battery at any SwapSpot partner shops. The TIER FOUR also features other new features, such as front and rear indicator lights and an integrated helmet.[26][3]

In September 2020, TIER was recognised and selected as one of 2020’s 50 Sustainability & Climate Leaders, focusing on international sustainability and climate initiatives supported by the United Nations.[27]

November 2020, TIER raised a significant Series C round of $250 million, led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2 in November 2020.[28]

Usage[edit]

To use TIER’s service, users install the TIER app on their smartphones, which displays all nearby available vehicles (tracked by GPS). Before starting a trip, the user supplies their payment information. The user then scans the QR code on the vehicle to begin their trip. To end the trip, the user parks the vehicle then ends the ride through the app, thereby locking the vehicle’s wheels. The price of the trip is immediately withdrawn from the user's payment method (credit card, PayPal). If any problems are encountered with a trip (like a malfunctioning vehicle), the user can report it through the app.

Operating area and hours

In the TIER app, the user can see the operating area of the service. TIER doesn't have set operating hours. The availability of TIER vehicles differs from city to city. TIER operates every day of the week.

Locations

TIER operates in 90+ cities across 11 countries.

Vehicles

TIER, depending on location, offers two different types of vehicles.

Electric scooter

TIER has a fleet of e-scooters and they last about 24 months each. Three different electric scooter models are currently in use:

  • TIER TWO
  • TIER THREE
  • TIER FOUR

All of the scooter models that TIER uses can reach speeds of up to 20km/h (12.5 mph) in Germany and up to 25 km/h (16 mph) in all other markets, with a range of about 20–40 km (12–25 mi) per charge.

Electric moped

TIER has a fleet of 5,000 electric mopeds. Currently available in Berlin, Cologne and Munich, Germany.

Prices

TIER’s pricing typically starts at €1 to unlock an electric scooter or electric moped, plus a variable rate per minute depending on location.

Operations[edit]

Warehouses and charging

TIER does not rely on gig workers, private contractors who sign up to charge e-scooters or e-mopeds. In alignment with its commitment to sustainability and remaining climate-neutral, TIER has also committed to supplying all warehouses with green energy by the end of 2020.

Competition[edit]

TIER’s main competitors are Lime, Bird, Voi, Wind, Bolt and small micro-mobility providers.
