TRENDnet, Inc.

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

TRENDnet, Inc. is a privately owned, American networking and surveillance brand with its global headquarters in Southern California. The company designs products that are appropriate for both SMB applications, and home users..[1]

The company has a revolving product portfolio of approximately 300 products in more than a dozen categories, including indoor and outdoor wireless, Power over Ethernet (PoE), IP cameras, fiber, NVRs, KVM, Powerline, and USB.[2]

TRENDnet is based out of Torrance, California[3] with satellite offices in Taiwan, Europe, and Latin America[4]. The company ships products out of two distribution centers: one in the US and the other in the Netherlands[5]. TRENDnet products are sold worldwide in more than 125 countries[6].

History[edit]

TRENDnet was founded in 1990[7] by Pei and Peggy Huang[8]. Before starting the company, Pei Huang was an engineer with a background in the IT, communications, and defense industries[9]. Huang has described his vision for TRENDnet was to make products and ‘Networks People Trust™”, now the company’s official tagline[10].

The company targeted the global market early on. It entered the Latin America market with Mexico in 1990 and the European market with Germany in 1993. TRENDnet later expanded into Asia in 1998. In 2011, TRENDnet established a European logistics center.[11] The company earned its first $5 million in revenue in 1996.

TRENDnet launched its first product in 1991 with an 8-bit Ethernet card. The company’s first network switch was released in 1997[12], and its first router hit the market in 1998. In 2005, TRENDnet launched its first IP camera/surveillance camera.[13]

In 2008, TRENDnet launched a green initiatives program with its GREENnet™ technology. GREENnet is a TRENDnet wired switch-based technology that controls the amount of electrical power to a device.[14] In 2011, TRENDnet launched GREENwifi™, a similar technology but for wireless devices. [15]

In January 2015, TRENDnet introduced industrial-grade switches and fiber solutions[16] to their portfolio. Later that same year, the company added NVRs[17] to their surveillance line up.

TRENDnet’s products fall into several networking and surveillance categories, including wireless, network switches, PoE, network cameras, NVRs and DVRs, Industrial/hardened, 10G, Fiber, KVM, Powerline, and USB.[18]

TRENDnet was first to market multiple product segments, including the first Skype phone kit[20], 500Mbit/s Powerline adapters[21], and the first complete line of 450Mbit/s wireless solutions[22] with a combination of both routers and adapters.

FTC Statement[edit]

In 2012, a camera hack was published that affected several IP cameras across multiple brands in the industry. An FTC case on the matter regarding TRENDnet was settled and was widely regarded as serving a message to IoT device manufacturers that the FTC is keeping an eye on the industry[23]. However, it should be noted that that the case was not regarding the security of the actual product[24]

In response to the FTC case, TRENDnet made the following statement:[25]

Upon awareness of a TRENDnet IP camera hack in 2012, TRENDnet immediately initiated every effort to respond to and resolve the hack. TRENDnet immediately released updated firmware which eliminated the published hack for related product models. Product shipments were stopped and corrective firmware updates were performed for all affected models. Substantive resources were dedicated towards the goal of bringing awareness of this hack to consumers.

For over 23 years, TRENDnet has built a reputation of offering network hardware solutions to consumers worldwide. TRENDnet has worked closely with the FTC throughout this process. The product hack and the subsequent FTC action was used as an opportunity to improve best practices which support augmented product security for existing and future products. Furthermore, a systematic security review process from an accredited third-party entity helps maintain best practices into the future.
