TT the Artist is an American rapper, producer, and filmmaker.
Born Tedra Marie Wilson in 1984 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to Jennifer King and Wayne Wilson, she was raised in a strict religious household. In 1998 her mother left their Pentecostal Church and her parents divorced: young Wilson found herself drawn to the arts and music that she hadn't previously had access to.[1] At the age of 18 Wilson moved to Baltimore to attend the Maryland Institute College of Art, studying fine arts with a concentration in video production. While at MICA she secured an internship with MTV in New York doing television production, where she picked up skills with both ends of a camera. Wilson graduated in 2006 with a BA and then moved to New York full time, living there for two years before returning to Baltimore.[2]
Back in Baltimore from 2008 to 2018, Wilson pursued a career as a vocalist, exploring hardcore rap and house music before finding her sound.[3] During those ten years, Wilson worked curating music events, stewarding the local arts scene, shooting her own music videos, branching out into fashion and design, and teaching video and music production to youth in the Baltimore city school system.[4] Her performance career flourished. In 2009 she released her first EP: by 2010 she was opening for Dan Deacon, Phantogram, and Thunderheist.[5] In 2013 she broke into a more mainstream stage when she collaborated with Diplo on a track called "Dat A Freak" released under Diplo's Mad Decent label- the track was later sampled by Jennifer Lopez for her track Booty. In 2016 she collaborated with trap artist Baauer on the song "Make it Bang" on his debut album Aa, which was later used on the soundtrack of the X-Men film Logan. [6] She also collaborated in 2016 with DJ Shiftee on the song "Dope Girls"[7] and in 2017 had numerous other TV and film placements for her songs.
In July 2018 Wilson moved to LA, seeking to grow her career and connect the Baltimore Club scene with a larger audience.[8] She started Club Queen Records (named in honor of K-Swift), a record label dedicated to giving woman of color musicians a platform and mentoring them in their career journeys.[9]
In 2020 Wilson debuted her documentary film Dark City: Beneath the Beat at SXSW, where it met with favorable reviews and was soon picked up by Netflix for an April 2021 release.[10] Dark City, the filming of which began nearly a decade before its release, is a music-focused documentary dedicated to Baltimore and its club scene.[11] It highlights the works of artists such as Mighty Mark, Jonny Blaze, Blaqstarr, and TT the Artist herself, memorializes fallen club scene anchors Tamika “Fatgirl” Raye and K-Swift, and lifts up club dancing especially through the works of Bmore Than Dance and the Team Squad Up Dance Crew.[12]
