TV Cabo Branco
TV Cabo Branco (channel 7) is a Brazilian television station headquartered in João Pessoa, capital of the state of Paraíba, serving as an affiliate of TV Globo for most of the state. The station belongs to Rede Paraíba de Comunicação, the media arm of food company Grupo São Braz, owned by businessman José Carlos da Silva Júnior as its flagship television property. Founded in 1986 by former governor of Paraíba Milton Cabral, it was the first TV station in the city of João Pessoa. Its transmission tower, located in the courtyard of the station's headquarters, in the Tambiá neighborhood, is one of the city's main landmarks.
History
The frequency was first used by TV Rádio Clube de Pernambuco's relay station, installed in 1960, months after its broadcasts in Recife started.[1] The relay continued until July 1980, when it, alongside six other stations that were Rede Tupi affiliates, were ordered to shut down.[2] This led to the relayer being replaced by one of TV Jornal from Recife, which at the time was a Rede Bandeirantes affiliate.[1]
The station was founded by brothers and businessmen Antônio Bezerra Cabral and Milton Bezerra Cabral state governor of the time), who, back then, owned radio stations Arapuan AM and FM. In early board meetings in 1984, the station had the provisional name TV Arapuan.[3]
In August 1986, color bars replaced the TV Jornal relays, and were announcing a new station, TV Cabo Branco. Its first local program upon launching in October was Câmera 7, news bulletin with cultural agenda presented by Geraldo Oliveira. The station inherited the Bandeirantes affiliation from the former relayer.[1]
At midnight on January 1, 1987, became a Rede Globo affiliate. That day, two editions of Jornal da Cabo Branco were shown, in the slots given by the network to local newscasts. Late that morning, Edilane Araújo presented Jornal da Cabo Branco 1ª Edição, a premiere which was supposed to be pre-recorded before going on air, but ended up being done live, amidst such anxiety and emotions.[1]
In the same year, businessman José Carlos da Silva Júnior, owner of Grupo São Braz and TV Paraíba (Globo's affiliate in Campina Grande) and one of TV Cabo Branco's partners, acquires the station's control, through son-in-law Leonel Freire, attorney for several minority partners linked to former governor Wilson Braga, according to the press at the time.
