TV Rookie Competition (Chinese: TV新秀爭霸站; pinyin: xīn xiù zhēng bà zhàn) was a variety show on CTS. It premiered on July 9, 1988, and was produced by Zhang Xiaoyan (張小燕) and hosted by Cao Lan (曹蘭) and Tang Zhiwei (湯志偉), airing every afternoon from 12:10 to 1:40 PM. It originally aired under the name “Youth Rivalry” (青春大對抗), before the name was changed in February 1989.[1][2]
TV Rookie Competition was a variety show that gave young people the opportunity to perform various talents and trained them to be television personalities. It is one of the most successful producers of talent in Taiwanese television history. When the show premiered, it featured six female assistant hosts, a girl group called the Little Cat Team (小貓隊). In order to reach a gender balance, Carrier Entertainment Agency (開麗創意組合) announced an open audition for three male assistant hosts. Nicky Wu (吳奇隆), Julian Chen (陳志朋), and Alec Su (陳志朋) were eventually chosen, forming the three-person boy band “Little Tiger Team” (小虎隊).[3][4][5][6]
On July 15, 1990, the show changed its name once again to “Youth Competition” (青春爭霸站) and moved to the TTV station. However, Tang Zhiwei did not follow the show to the new station, because of his contract with CTS.[7][8]
