Tabletopia is an online sandbox virtual table for playing and creating digital tabletop games. Tabletopia is available in various browsers (IE, Safari, Google Chrome, Firefox, Opera), as a downloadable client on Steam and from February 2018 as an iOS app.[2][3][4] It also will be available on Android devices. The platform is developed by Tabletopia Inc. and was released in December 2016 after a successful Kickstarter campaign in August 2015.

Tabletopia is partly free-to-play. Premium player and designer subscriptions are available with access to advanced features, similar to Spotify.[5][6]

Gameplay

Tabletopia is a sandbox virtual arena with no rules-enforcement or AI. Players are required to know the rules of the games and perform actions like moving pieces, flipping cards, rolling dice, etc.[7] Also, it is possible to play with house rules, fan-made rules, or no rules at all.[8]

Many automated actions are available, like card-shuffling and dealing, dice-rolling, magnetic placement of components on special zones, hand management, and some others.[9] Turn-based modes and counters can be used to guide the gaming process,[10] game rules are available while in game. Ready game setups for various player numbers are available for each game.[11] Customizable camera controls let players save camera positions, change angle, switch between them by hot keys, etc.[9]

Playground and workshop

Tabletopia is divided in two parts: Playground for players and Workshop for game designers.

Playground[12] is a section where all games are catalogued and categorized. The games can be sorted by age, language, number of players, time required, etc.[13] Players can schedule games in advance, play solo and in hotseat mode.

After choosing a game, the player creates a game room and can share it with other players on Tabletopia or outside.[6] No account is needed for guests to join.[10]

Workshop[14] is a section for game creators who can use existing images to create digital versions of their games.[9] Various common objects are available, or users can create their own cards, dice, tiles, boards, miniatures, surfaces, etc.[15]

Games then can be saved and shared with all other players or audience outside Tabletopia for promotion, playtesting,[10] monetization, etc.[16] Based on the monetization program, publishers can receive 70% of money gained from paying players for their games.

Such publishers as Stonemaier Games, Ares Games, Game Salute, Red Raven Games, Roxley, Grey Fox Games, Eagle-Gryphon Games, Knizia Games, Arcane Wonders, NSKN Games, and many others are known to support the platform and offer their licensed games on it.[17] The platfrom is also often used to provide digital versions of tabletop games during Kickstarter campaigns,[7] and to host online board game tournaments.[18]

Game catalog

The game catalog includes around 570 board games, including public domain games like chess, checkers, domino, various card games, riichi mahjong, hanafuda, etc.[19] All content is licensed and supported by the right-holders,[20] the games are made with official art and renders.[21]

Most games are fully or partly available for free. Premium games require at least one user with subscription per group to play.

Development

Tabletopia was created in early 2014, when Tim Bokarev,[22] Artem Zinoviev and Dmitry Sergeev created Tabletopia Inc. USA and started development. The main team is located in Novosibirsk, Russia. The international team includes people from Eastern Europe, England, Germany, USA.

The crowdfunding campaign in August 2015 earned $133,721 by 2,545 backers.[23] Tabletopia received Green Light on Steam in September 2015[24] and was made available on Steam in March 2016.

The platform remained in Early Access until December 2016, when it was officially released on Steam[11] and on the web.[25]
