Taher Jaoui (born 1978 in Tunis) is a artist who lives and works in Madrid since 2020, after several years spent in Berlin, Germany. Jaoui studied sciences before taking the plunge into his artistic career in 2013.

Biography[edit]

Born in 1978 in Tunis, Taher Jaoui graduated from Sorbonne University in Paris in 2007. He also studied acting based on the Stanislavski's system between Paris and Los Angeles. His work is a reflection of his personal story, an assemblage of eclectic journeys in endless communication between each other..[1] In 2013, the artist began his artistic journey with the creation of analogic collages. They are made mainly using vintage family photos found on the flea market in Berlin. These works opened up a great window of inspiration and flexibility based on the contrast of old photographs and more contemporary images.

Jaoui started focusing on painting in 2015, where he explored different techniques that allow him to convert instinctively his emotion of the moment on the canvas. He uses a wide palette of colors and textures in a combination of oil, lacquer, spray paint, acrylic, and charcoal to create a mix between the abstract and the representative. In many of his works, fragments of mathematical operations and formulas can be observed, which accompany the rest of the vibrant abstract paint strokes. Technological and mathematical languages have been fundamental during the life and career of artist Taher Jaoui. Before his leap into the art world, the author worked as a computer engineer in finance, thus being an expert connoisseur of such languages and their formulation.[2]

Technique[edit]

Jaoui is influenced by African Art, cartoons, COBRA, cubism, dadaism, digital art as glitch art; as well as the philosophy and attitude of Abstract Expressionism. [3] The artist produces his work following a creative process based upon intuition and subconscious. Taher Jaoui’s paintings are rich assemblages of layered forms, vibrant colors, expressive gestures, and mathematic signs and formulae. Jaoui creates this captivating and labor-intensive work with the idea of continuing the legacy of Abstract Expressionism[4]

Through a series of spontaneous movements, directly inspired by the way canvas responds to layers of paint and gestures applied to it, Jaoui compares his work to a dance routine.[5] And while impulsive and unconstrained in its core, the familiarity with materials is essential for the creative process that strongly depends on the ability to respond quickly and foresee the way the elements will work together.
