Takis Shelter
The Takis Shelter is nonprofit organization with the primary objective to save strain dogs, abandoned animals, based in Ierapetra, the South of Crete.
Background
Since beginning of Greece crisis situation with of the stray animals in Crete has been deteriorated.
Crisis has hit Greece and Crete, where a lot of families used to have several pets, so many of pets have been abandoned. On top of that there is no culture of neutering in Crete, so the problem with stray dogs has been raised.[1]
History
Foundation
The founder, Theoklitos Proestakis (also known as Takis) invested all his money, sold his car and caravan to construct the shelter, because he have been shocked by the visions of the rubbish dump.[1] “One day I went to the rubbish dump. I saw dogs with broken legs and the bone was out of the leg and all sorts of terrible things.”[2]
In the beginning he just started to feed the animals bring them water, but the people near the dump started to get angry on him, so he founded the shelter on private territory.[1]
Turning point
After Takis has uploaded the photos of dog that has been skinned alive (Fellnase) and its treatment, the turning point has come for the Shelter.
In addition to that there are dozens of photos and videos with nearly dead animals, posted in Facebook, that have been healed and saved in the Shelter, thanks to donations, volunteers and adopters. There are 236,733 followers in the non-profit organization Facebook page.[3]
Takis Shelter has been awarded by The Stiansen Award 2017 for efforts to promote animal rights and welfare.[4]
Current state
Takis has found new hope and almost every day he posts new video with happy shelter inhabitants.
Vets bills (neutering, etc.) and food cost 2 000 euro every month and all the money comes from donations, mostly from Europe and United States.[1]
Local authorities are unable to help: "There are vets from Germany who would come here to do free castration, but for some reason the mayor won’t sign the papers”.[2]

According to Takis, the negative effect on tourism in Crete is possible. But he believes that the new Greeks generation is more responsible and things will be better for animals.[2]
