Talal Yassine
Talal Yassine OAM (born 1st January 1972) is an Australian businessman, philanthropist and founder of the world’s first Islamic-compliant retirement Fund, Crescent Wealth.[1].
Early life and education
Born in Izal, Lebanon in 1972, Talal migrated to Australia in 1977. He attended Granville Boys High School and commenced tertiary education through a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws (LLB) at the University of Sydney in 1991, then continuing to Macquarie University in 1993, where he served as the President of the Student’s Council and the Treasurer of the Student Union. Talal then continued his education through a Master of Laws (LLM) at the University of Sydney, and a Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) at Deakin University.
Islamic Finance
In 2011[2] along with several co founders, Talal established Crescent Wealth, an Australian-based wealth manager and the first retirement fund with international accreditation with the principles of Islamic Finance. The fund manages over $150m Australian dollars on behalf of over 6,000 members[3].
Talal delivers keynote addresses at international forums concerning ethical investments including the World Islamic Economic Forum[4], the Global Islamic Economy Summit, the Kuala Lumpur Islamic Finance Forum, the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA)[5], the CEO Institute, Australian National University[6] and the Australian Arab Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
He serves as a board member of the Responsible Finance and Investment (RFI) Foundation[7][8] and Finocracy[9], and appears on Sky News Australia's Business channel to offer insights on investments in the Islamic market and perspectives from ethical fund managers[10][11].
He was named among the Muslim 500 Most Influential Muslims[12], Islamica's "500 People who make the Islamic Economy"[13], and the Australian Muslim Man of the Year in 2016[14].
Philanthropy and Causes
In 2006, Talal founded the Crescent Institute[15] with the aim of providing greater access to senior Australian leadership[16], he also serves as the Secretary of the Crescent Foundation[17] which provides tertiary education to Australian refugees.
Talal advocates for a culturally and economically open Australia as a member of several not for profit boards including Media Diversity Australia[18] [19]and the Whitlam Institute[20] and previously as Chairman for the Council of Australian-Arab Relations with the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade[21], and has been critical of anti-immigration comments[22][23] from Australia's Minister for Immigration, Peter Dutton and Donald Trump's "Muslim Ban" in 2017[24].
For his community service, Talal was awarded a medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2010[25].

Talal is an Adjunct Professor in the Western Sydney University's business school[26] and Honorary Professiorial Fellow at the Australian National University's Crawford School of Public Policy[27]. He contributes to matters on Australian Foreign Affairs, with a focus on South-East Asia and the United Arab Emirates.

Political Involvement
Talal has been an active member of the Australian Labor Party since 1991. In 2001 he stood aside during preselection in favour of Barbara Perry for the seat of Auburn in New South Wales[34]. In 2014, he provided support for Auburn Mayor Hichem Zraika during the pre-selection process, and is involved in fundraising activities for the party and its candidates, particularly in Western Sydney[35]
