Tamiko Beyer is an Asian American poet, writer, editor, and activist.

Early life

Tamiko Beyer spent the first ten years of her life in Tokyo, Japan and has lived in many coastal cities.

Career

Beyer received her MFA in poetry writing from Washington University, St. Louis where she was awarded a Chancellor's Fellowship [1]. Her books include *We Come Elemental* (Alice James Books) and two chapbooks: bough breaks (Meritage Press) and a collaborative chapbook written with Kamiko Hahn, Dovetail (Slapering Hol Press).

The critic Karla Huston notes Beyer's work around the element of water emphasizes its constant tides and changeability. Through double colons and her depictions of water interacting with landscape, Beyer creates an understanding that queerness is not simply relating to love and sex, but as part of "the ebb and flow of everything."[2] Sean Singer writes in The Rumpus that Beyer's book refreshes the lyric voice by moving away from irony towards communions and minglings that speak "truth to power." [3] The intersections in Beyer's book, where "identity and body and politics" meet, are composed of lines "as firm as we would have ourselves believe." [4]

Awards and Honors

Tamiko Beyer was a Kundiman fellow and won the 2011 Kinereth Gensler Award for her book of poems We Come Elemental. She also has received grants from the Astrea Lesbian Writers' Fund, and VONA /Voices.

Tamiko Beyer was a finalist for the 2014 Lambda Award in Poetry.
