Tangle the Lemur (Japanese: タングル・ザ・リーマー Hepburn: Tanguru za Rīmā) is a character from Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog franchise, created for IDW Publishing's Sonic the Hedgehog comic series. Created by writer Ian Flynn and artist Tyson Hesse, she debuted in the series in 2018 and was one of the first original characters introduced in the IDW series.
She is a grey anthropomorphic ring-tailed lemur known for her bubbly and thrill-seeking personality, as well as her elastic prehensile tail.
Creation and development
Tangle was brought up when the staff at IDW Publishing wanted an independent female character who could join Sonic on his adventures. Since none of the main female characters within the Sonic series were able to fit that occupation, Tangle, who would be able to accompany Sonic’s adventures and look cool while doing it, was thus conceptualized.[2] Lead writer Ian Flynn conceptualized the character, while artist Tyson Hesse handled her design.[3]
Prior to being given a name at all, IDW wanted the character “to be like a lot of other great Sonic characters and have a special ability tied to one of her features.”[4] Ultimately, she was inspired by the prototype rabbit design of Sonic—this concept for him was that she could utilize her ears to pick up and throw objects,[2] hence, she was pitched as “Tangle the Hare” initially.[5] After pondering for animals who could do cool features with their traits such as flexible bunny ears and noses reminiscent of an anteater,[6] the staff decided on a ring-tailed lemur, whose tail could prove a highly adaptable tool. Finally, she was given the name “Tangle” as a reference to how “she likes to "tangle" with bad guys.”[6]
Appearances
Comics
In her first appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog #4, Tangle helps defend her hometown of Spiral Hill Village from a Badnik raid. Sonic arrives to assist her against the attacking robots, while Blaze the Cat later joins them to help defeat the remaining Badniks.[7]
Video games
Tangle appeared in numerous mobile games, such as Sonic Forces: Speed Battle and Sonic Rumble Party.[8][9][10][11][12][13][better source needed] Prior to her first console debut in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds,[14] she was briefly mentioned in Sonic Frontiers, which in turn confirmed the comic series were part of the mainline canon.[15]
In other media
Tangle makes recurring appearances in the audio drama series The Chaotix Casefiles.[1] She later was featured in the web series TailsTube.[16]
Merchandise
Tangle has received merchandise based on her appearances in the IDW comic series, including plush toys.[17] In 2025, an action figure of Tangle was released by Jakks Pacific as part of its Sonic the Hedgehog toyline.[18]

Caroline Cespedes: "How do you choose what different animals the characters are, such as Tangle and Starline?" / David Mariotte: "That's a very interesting question! Sometimes it just happens naturally—Whisper was always planned as a wolf. Sometimes it takes a couple of revisions. For Tangle, we though about all sorts of animals that have a really distinct feature that we thought could be bendy. Like bendy rabbit ears came up, as well as like a anteater type nose. But Lemur ended up making the most sense."
