Tangled Up in Blue

Tangled Up in Blue, or TUIB, is an all-gender undergraduate singing group at Yale University that performs American folk, bluegrass, and country music. Founded in 1987, TUIB is the only multi-instrumental singing group at Yale: the group's arrangements are built around guitar, banjo, mandolin, and fiddle parts.

TUIB performs frequently on campus and tours every March during Yale's spring break, most recently in Ireland. The group also occasionally performs off-campus throughout the academic year, including at the Yale School of the Environment's annual Harvest Festival.

History

Tangled Up in Blue was founded in 1987 by then-sophomore Nerissa Nields, who recruited nine students to form the group during the fall of 1987. Once established on campus, TUIB expanded to a year-to-year average of sixteen members selected by audition. TUIB's early repertoire consisted largely of folk revival classics by artists like Peter, Paul and Mary, Paul Simon, and John Prine, but a number of blues, bluegrass, and country songs have since been added.
