On March 31, 2022, a school shooting occurred at Tanglewood Middle School in Greenville County, South Carolina which resulted in the death of one student.[1][2]
Shooting[edit]
In the 7th grade hallway (700th wing) of Tanglewood Middle School at approximately 12:30pm, the shooter shot 12-year-old Jamari Cortez Bonaparte Jackson.[1][2][5] He was hospitalized, but later died.[2] Nearly 100 deputies responded to the shooting, the Greenville County Sheriff's Office reported.[3] The male shooter fled the scene immediately after shooting Jamari and was found hiding under a house deck at a nearby residence on Easley Bridge Road at approximately 1:30pm by police.[3][6] At 2:20pm, about 2 hours after the shooting, the school district released a statement which said "law enforcement has confirmed that the suspect is in custody, and they are not looking for any additional suspects."[5]
Aftermath[edit]
Students were taken to Brookwood Church in Simpsonville after the incident to reunite with their families.[2] A parent stated "this is my worst nightmare; I think about this all the time," in response to the shooting.[2]
Bus routes for other schools in the school district were delayed.[5]
