Tanhaji is the soundtrack album for the 2020 film of the same name. It consists of four tracks, with one song composed by Ajay-Atul and Mehul Vyas each and two songs composed by Sachet-Parampara. Swanand Kirkire wrote one song in the film, whereas the rest of the tracks were written by Anil Verma. The background score of the film is composed by Sandeep Shirodkar.[2] The album featured vocals by Mehul Vyas, Adarsh Shinde, Sukhwinder Singh, Shreya Ghoshal, Sachet Tandon, Parampara Thakur, Ganesh Chandanshive and Harshdeep Kaur.[3] The soundtrack album for the Marathi version had reused the same set of vocals, excluding for some songs, whose vocals were provided by Avadhoot Gupte and Kirti Killedar.[4]

Development[edit]

On 29 November 2019, Ajay Devgn shared the teaser of the first song "Shankara Re Shankara",[5] with the full track was unveiled the following day. The song features Ajay Devgn, as Tanaji Malusare showing his dancing skills in front of Saif Ali Khan, who is playing the main antagonist Udaybhan Singh Rathore, ahead of their final stand on the battlefield. The song visuals and the choreography performed by Ganesh Acharya was praised by audience.[6] On 7 November 2019, the makers released the second song "Maay Bhavani".[7] The song showcases celebration of the festival of Shimga, representing the arrival of God. The music video showcases the entire village gathered together with Tanhaji Malusare's family to celebrate this festival with zeal and enthusiasm.[8] Talking about the song, director Om Raut says, “Marathas are known for their rich culture. Maay Bhavani is a special song where you will see Tanhaji celebrating Shimga, which also marks an important moment in his life.”[9]

Sachet Tandon and Parampara Thakur opened up about composing for "Ghamand Kar". The duo opined that the album was their first in the period-drama genre and the song is not a usual sad song or a romantic song or a club song, it is touted to be a war cry number. They stated that "We knew we had to deliver something really strong and different. So we thought of creating a haunting melody for the situation. It, fortunately, became the theme for Ajay Devgn sir's character Tanhaji. Also, it is the story of Maratha Warriors so we had to keep the background and the instrumentation in mind to have the perfect balance of melody and contemporary sounds."[10]

Reception[edit]

Debarati Sen of The Times of India, writing for the soundtrack album in her review, praised "Maay Bhavani" stating "Ajay-Atul has excelled in the beautiful merging of different tempos, and deftly woven in the varied nuances of classical and folk in one single package."[11] Vipin Nair, in his review for The Hindu, stated "With three hummable numbers, the film’s music is enjoyable but nothing out of the ordinary."[12] Joginder Tuteja of Bollywood Hungama reviewed "The soundtrack of Tanhaji - The Unsung Warrior delivers as expected. Though there aren't many memorable songs out there, they do well enough to keep the film's narrative engaging."[13] The song "Ghamand Kar" was listed in the Top 5 Bollywood Song of 2020, from The Times of India.[14]
