Tape Recovery Simulator 96K[1] is an upcoming[2][3][4] Puzzle adventure video game developed by Caffeine Withdrawal Games, inspired by the challenges and experience of loading data from audio tapes in the 80's and early 90's. It is set to be released Q4 2021 for Microsoft Windows.

During the 80s and early 90s audio analogue tape was one of the main storage media with a capacity of 600 Kb stored as actual sound. It wasn't very reliable, since tapes and tape recorders varied greatly in quality and compatibility. If not stored properly, tapes have a tendency to degrade over time. Sometimes, some of the data can still be recovered even after decades of mistreatment[5].

Gameplay[edit]

Tape Recovery Simulator 96K builds new gameplay mechanics around old data recovery tricks(header swap, audio channel swap, leader short circuit, just to name a few).[5]

A lot of the gameplay revolves around tweaking the audio so that the very demanding, zero-error-tolerance loading routine can demodulate it. Even after getting the sound working the data might still be further encrypted, scattered, hidden, in unusual formats or lost forever.[1]

Story[edit]

In the game the player takes the role of a new employee of Extra-Extra Systems, a 3-people firm that's devoted to make lots of money for its leader, Darlibatis.[1]

Devot Darlibatis is the master of chaos. He likes to make effortless money and sacrifice anything in the process (especially if it’s the health, sanity or quality of life of his employees). He’s misusing all the typical levers of management. He never fully understands the whole complexity of the software development process he manages. He’s the guy that never gives his employees raises but takes every opportunity to dock their pay. He’s the boss nobody wants to have.[1]

Development[edit]

Using 5+ years of audio data loading experience and 10+ years of software development, Caffeine Withdrawal Software has been developing TRS96K since may 2020. The current goal of having an Early_access release Q4 2021.
