Tarbiat Modares University (Persian: دانشگاه تربیت مدرس Dāneshgāh-e Tarbiyat Modares, lit. "Professor Training University") is an exclusively graduate university with its main campus in Tehran, Iran. It was founded in 1982 and is consistently ranked among top universities in Iran.[2] Tarbiat Modares University (TMU) is the only exclusively graduate university in Iran and was founded to train university professors. Admission is through national-level university exams (i.e., Concours) and in most programs is limited to top performers.[3]
About TMU
Established in 1982, Tarbiat Modares University (TMU) is the first comprehensive graduate school in Iran. In particular, a majority of Ph.D. programs in basic sciences and engineering were initially offered at TMU. As an elite, exclusively postgraduate university, its primary mission is to train academic staff and researchers for universities and higher education centers, as well as providing an environment for world-class research. TMU currently offers M.A./M.Sc. degrees in 171 academic programs and Ph.D. degrees in 132 academic programs, with more than 7300 and 3700 students at each level, respectively. At present, there are 17 faculties and 14 affiliated research centers in the university. The university has more than 700 full-time academic members.
Faculty of Agriculture
The College of Agriculture was established at Tarbiat Modares University (T.M.U.) in 1983. The primary objective was to train and educate graduate students at the M.Sc. and Ph.D. levels for work as professionals in universities and research institutes, as well as in the private sector. A wide range of scientific courses are offered for postgraduate students. Specialized seminars, guided by faculty members, help students focus their research in areas related to their interests, as well as solving agricultural challenges at the national and global scale.
Faculty of Arts
At present, 183 students are pursuing their courses in various areas such as painting, animation, specific art studies, theatre, graphics, visual art literature, architecture, urban and regional planning, construction, and building management. Of 45 lecturers and professors, 19 are permanent members. Facilities such as studios, a computer center, and a library are available to all students of the college. Many directors, professors, and lecturers in other universities and organizations are graduates of this college.
Faculty of Basic Sciences
Tarbiat Modares University (TMU) was established in 1982 as the first post-revolution graduate school in the Islamic Republic of Iran. The meaning of TMU in Farsi indicates its main objective, which is to serve as an institute for training university professors. One of the main constituents of TMU is the Faculty of Basic Sciences (FBS), which was originally composed of Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Mathematics, and Physics. Rapid growth resulted from high student enrollment, an increase in the number of faculty members, and the agglomeration of research facilities. As a result, the Departments of Biology, Mathematics, and Top Technologies formed their own corresponding colleges. Therefore, at this time, FBS only includes the Departments of Chemistry, Geology, and Physics.
The Chemistry Department has 16 full-time faculty members who are active in four major areas: Analytical, Inorganic, Organic, and Physical Chemistry. The Geology Department has 12 full-time faculty members who work in four major areas: Economic Geology, Engineering Geology, Petrology, and Tectonics. The Physics Department has nine full-time faculty members, active in three major areas: Atomic and Molecular Physics, Condensed Phase, and Particle Physics.
Faculty of Biological Sciences
Following the establishment of Tarbiat Modares University in 1361, educational and research activities related to life sciences began with three faculty members in plant sciences and genetics groups in 1366. The Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics were added in 1367, and then the Department of Biology was formed into four groups consisting of plant sciences, genetics, biochemistry, and biophysics in 1372. The nanobiotechnology field was added in 1386. The Department of Biology was added to the Faculty of Biological Sciences in 1388.
Faculty of Chemical Engineering
The Faculty of Chemical Engineering at Tarbiat Modares University (TMU) was established in 1983. The Faculty of Chemical Engineering has 32 faculty members (11 Professors, 8 Associate Professors, and 13 Assistant Professors) working in six departments: Chemical Engineering-Process, Petroleum Engineering, Polymer Engineering, Polymerization Processes Engineering, Biotechnology Engineering, and Biomedical Engineering. The faculty is known as the applied scientific hub for biotechnology and hydrocarbon processes across the country. A total of 462 students are studying in the Faculty of Chemical Engineering (314 M.Sc. students and 148 Ph.D. candidates).
Faculty of Civil & Environmental Engineering
The Faculty of Civil & Environmental Engineering offers a variety of M.Sc. and Ph.D. degree programs. Each program offers a challenging mix of coursework, lab work, and research. The Master of Science program is versatile, suitable for students who intend to launch a career in academia, and also for those who want a position working for an engineering firm.
Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering
The Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) at Tarbiat Modares University provides specialization at the MSc and PhD levels in many areas, including biomedical engineering, computer engineering, communications, control, electronics, power systems. Inter-departmental efforts include joint curriculum development in IT Engineering (E-commerce and ICT), offered in collaboration with the Industrial Eng. Department in the Faculty of Engineering.
The ECE Faculty has strong research ties with industry and has significantly increased its collaborations and joint planning activities in recent years. This Faculty has obtained several strategic grants for developing research laboratories in Optoelectronics, VLSI, satellite communications, and power systems. The ECE Faculty graduate programs aim to develop an understanding of the scientific basis of critical technologies and prepare students to apply state-of-the-art analysis and design methods to integrated electronics, Optoelectronics, control, communications, computer systems, biomedical engineering, and software and hardware engineering problems. PhD and M.Sc. degrees are offered.
Faculty of Humanities
As one of the first post-revolutionary graduate schools, the Faculty of Humanities was established in 1982. The Faculty of Humanities has 23 educational groups and 89 academic members (professors, associate professors, and assistant professors) and 59 administrative staff. Currently, 493 M.A. and 345 Ph.D. students are studying in different departments; furthermore, 276 students have graduated from this faculty. There are two language laboratories, a library with a large number of rare books, a computer center, and laboratories for geography, psychology, and physical education in the faculty.
Faculty of Industrial and Systems Engineering
The Faculty of Industrial and Systems Engineering has five departments: Electronic Marketing and Business, Industrial Engineering, IT Engineering, Socio-economic Systems Engineering, and Systems and Productivity Management.
Faculty of Law
The Faculty of Law was established in 2012. Considering that TMU, as a graduate university, enjoys a unique position in the national educational and research system, different departments of law have always focused their attention on promoting education and research, especially at the doctoral level. To accomplish this mission, feasibility studies are carried out to assess the legal principles used in judicial proceedings for research projects.
Faculty of Management and Economics
The establishment of the Faculty of Management and Economics was authorized in 2008 by the authority of the board of trustees of Tarbiat Modares University (TMU) and in accordance with the university's strategic plan. The formal activities of the faculty, organized in eight departments, commenced in 2009. However, the longer history of teaching and research activities of these departments goes back to 1980, the date of the establishment of TMU as the first revolutionary-born, graduate university in Iran.
Faculty of Mathematical Sciences
The Faculty of Mathematical Sciences includes 20 permanent academic members with research interests in mathematics, statistics, and computer science. Students and faculty members are encouraged to interact through a variety of courses and seminars. The Faculty of Mathematical Sciences has four departments: Applied Math., Pure Math., Statistics, and Computer Sciences. The Department of Applied Mathematics is active in Mathematical Modeling, Numerical Analysis, and Optimization. The research areas in the Department of Pure Mathematics include Algebra (Group Theory and Non-Commutative Algebra), Analysis (Harmonic and Functional Analysis), Dynamical systems, Topology-Geometry (Algebraic and Differential), and Logic. The Department of Statistics is actively involved in Spatial and Environmental Statistics, Statistical Shape Analysis, Multilevel Data Analysis, Bayesian Inference, and Official Statistics. The Departments of Pure Math., Applied Math, and Statistics offer admission to students in M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs.
The Department of Computer Sciences is active in image processing, machine learning, data mining, and computational aspects of artificial intelligence.
Faculty of Mechanical Engineering
Faculty of Medical Sciences
The Faculty of Medical Sciences was established in 1982 by admitting 65 M.Sc. students in different medical science disciplines. The first group of M.Sc. students graduated in 1985. Doctorate postgraduate courses started in 1988 by admitting 26 Ph.D. students in six fields of medical sciences, including Biostatistics, Parasitology, Anatomy, Bacteriology, and Biochemistry, according to the Islamic Republic of Iran's plans for development and promoting higher postgraduate courses in the country. The first group of Ph.D. students graduated in 1993. The Faculty of Medical Sciences, by having more than 1100 M.Sc. and about 100 Ph.D. graduates in twenty different fields of medical sciences, has made a considerable contribution to educating and providing the academic staff required for higher education and research centers in the country. At the moment, more than 200 M.Sc. and 100 Ph.D. students are studying at the Faculty of Medical Sciences who will join their expected higher education/research centers in the near future. This faculty admits about 100 M.Sc. and 100 Ph.D. students in twenty different fields of medical sciences every year. This faculty consists of 18 departments.
Faculty of Engineering and Technology
The Faculty of Engineering educates and trains students in addition to conducting research in the main branches of engineering, including materials and mining engineering in different departments.
Faculty of Natural Resources and Marine Sciences
The Faculty of Natural Resources and Marine Sciences of Tarbiat Modares University was founded in 1982 in the city of Noor beside the Caspian Sea. The faculty offers a wide range of research opportunities in nine specialized areas, and postgraduates are welcome to work on M.Sc. and Ph.D. projects. The faculty includes the academic departments of Watershed Management, Forestry, Fishery, Wood and Paper Science, Environment, Range Management, Marine Biology, and Physical Oceanography.

Science and Technology Park
MSTP, as a comprehensive Science and Technology Park in Tehran, was launched in 2003 by the authorization of the Ministry of Science, Research, and Technology. This organization possesses two campuses of 60 and 4.8 hectares in Northeast (Shahid BaBaee) and West (Pajouhesh Campus) of Tehran, respectively.
In addition, a central bureau and sextuple incubators (including; Technology, Fundamental Sciences, Art, Humanities, Agriculture and Natural Resources, Health and Medical Sciences) are located in downtown Tehran. Depending on the enterprise's situation, the best location for establishment can be selected among these trial campuses.
