Biography

Dr. Shafi (1958 - May 6, 2020) was the lead consultant for haematology at Darent Valley Hospital in Dartford[1]. He routinely volunteered his time and spoke frequently at Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital and Research Centre in Pakistan.[citation needed] Dr. Shafi attended Cadet College Hasan Abdal,[citation needed] and received his Bachelor of Medicine from King Edward Medical University in Lahore, Pakistan in 1984. [2] Dr. Shafi continued to assist his patients over the phone after he himself had been diagnosed and was placed under quarantine.[3][4]

Death and legacy

Dr. Tariq Shafi died from COVID-19 on May 6, 2020.[5]. He is believed to be the first doctor and sixth health care worker from Kent to die from the virus.[6]. Dr. Shafi is the seventh Pakistani NHS professional to lose their life to COVID-19.[7]

Dr. Shafi's passing is notable in that he had no known underlying health conditions prior to contracting the virus.[citation needed] Instead, his death fits a larger pattern of ethnic minorities in England and Wales dying of coronavirus at far higher rates than their white peers according to an analysis by the London-based Institute of Fiscal Studies.[8][9]. According to this analysis, individuals from Pakistani backgrounds have been found to have death rates 2.9 times higher than their white British counterparts.[8]
