Tathagata "Das" Dasgupta is an American business executive who works in the fields of analytics. He is currently the Head of Data Science and Advanced Analytics at Viacom.[1]

Education[edit]

Dasgupta attended R K Mission Narendrapur in the Kolkata area of India. In 1983, he attended high school classes at St. Xavier's College, Kolkata. He graduated in 1985, and then began attending Presidency University where he received a Bachelor's of Science in Statistics. He also served as the Cultural Secretary of College from 1987 to 1989 and the Secretary of the College Film Club in 1986. He graduated in 1989.

From there, he attended the State University of New York at Buffalo in order to pursue a master's degree in Statistics. He began studying in 1990 and graduated in 1992.

He attended Penn State beginning in 1993. He earned a dual Ph.D. in Operations Research and Management Science. He graduated in 1997.[3]

Career[edit]

In 1997, Dasgupta joined i2 Technologies, Inc. as Senior Manager of the Strategic Services Group. Dasgupta worked as a member of a team that designed value engineering methodology that was subsequently rolled out to over 200 Fortune 500 client engagements. He left in 1999.

In 1999, Dasgupta joined Answerthink Consulting as the Director of Supply Chain Management. He left in 2002.

In 2002, Dasgupta joined Nexgenix as Senior Director of Next Generation Supply Chain Solutions. He left in 2005.

In 2004, Dasgupta joined UC Irvine at the Paul Merage School of Business as an Adjunct Professor of Operations and Decision Technologies. He taught MBA and Executive Education courses in Operations Excellence, Supply Chain Management, and Business Statistics. He left in 2013.

In 2005, Dasgupta joined Xavor Corporation as EVP and Managing Partner. He was responsible for building and developing a management consulting practice for Xavor, a boutique consulting firm, from the ground up. He offered strategic management consulting and advisory services to private and public companies. Dasgupta led 100% revenue growth and expanded the consultant team to more than 150, securing $24MM in revenue from management and technology consulting engagements. He realized $50MM in cost saves by leading global, cross-disciplinary teams in optimizing commercial practices, improving shipment accuracy and enhancing customer satisfaction. He left in 2011.[4]

In 2011, Dasgupta joined Ernst and Young as Executive Director of Strategy and Operations. He was responsible for the pursuit and delivery of advisory work across all sectors. The most recent clients are from manufacturing, media & entertainment, CPG, retail, consumer electronics, and high tech. He left in 2013.

Also in 2011, Dasgupta joined the Harvard Business Review as an advisory board member. He advised the editorial board on trending topics and articles covering advanced customer analytics and insights. Dasgupta is still currently a member.

In 2013, Dasgupta joined McKinsey & Company as an Associate Principal. He provided strategic management consulting services to clients in the high tech, media and entertainment, consumer goods, retail, and aerospace sectors. Here he designed and rolled out global operational strategy for a $13 billion agro-chemicals company. He left in 2015.

In 2014, Dasgupta joined the USC Marshall School of Business as adjunct professor of Data Science and Advanced Analytics. He currently teaches MBA and MS courses in Advanced Analytics and Logistics.[1]

In 2015, Dasgupta joined Amazon as Head of Amazon Customer Excellence System (ACES) in North America. Here, he ran three teams - "Think" (Business Analytics and Data Scientists), "Teach" (Six Sigma Master Black Belts), and "Deliver" (experienced Operations Managers). He realized multimillion-dollar cost savings by leading implementation of Optimized Operational best practices. He also achieved additional triple-digit million dollar cost savings based on delivery of technology-driven productivity processes to improve efficiencies.

In June 2017, Dasgupta joined Viacom as Head of Data Science and Advanced Analytics. He holds this position today. His three areas of oversight include Business Strategy, Mathematics, and Technology. He spearheads several projects with a team of others leaders and data scientists.[3]

Personal life[edit]

Dasgupta is married to filmmaker Monalisa Dasgupta, founder and CEO of Mona Lisa Movies International. Together, they have two children. The family lives in Irvine, California.

Dasgupta has written five books - three originals and two translations, including a translation of the works of Nobel Laureate poet Tomas Tranströmer into Bengali. He has co-authored several other poetry translation projects. He also co-edits the Bengali literary journal Ogrobeej, which consists of essays, short stories, and poetry. Ogrobeej is published in India, Bangladesh, the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia.[1]
