Tatya Vinchu is a fictional character of possessed puppet in the Zapatlela franchise. The character was created by Mahesh Kothare and designed by ventriloquist Ramdas Padhye. It was portrayed by Dilip Prabhavalkar. Tatya Vinchu is Executed by Inspector Mahesh Jadhav, but before Tatya dies, he chants a mantra which he received from Baba Chamatkar and manages to transmigrate his soul into a puppet.
The first part of the film Zapatlela is dubbed in Hindi as Khilona Bana Khalnayak, there the name of this character is Tatya Bichu,[5] in Gujarati as Jhadti Lidho,[6] and remade in Telugu as Ammo Bomma, the name of the murderous doll character in this remake is Gangaram.[7]

Early life[edit]
Tatya Vinchu is a gangster, he is running rampant and Inspector Mahesh Jadhav is called upon to kill him, Jadhav successful to kill Tatya at toy shop and the police captures Tatya's accomplice Kubdya Khavis. Before dying, Tatya Vinchu transfers his soul into a ventriloquism doll lying nearby using Mrityunjay Mantra. The police believe that Tatya Vinchu is dead. But he is alive as a puppet, After that Tatya Vinchu finds Laxmikant Bolke (Lakshya) is appropriate for possession. He wants to enter Lakshya's body, causing Lakshya to lose his life. Before that, There was only one way to kill him, Inspector Mahesh Jadhav shot him between his eyebrows.[8]
20 years later[edit]
Twenty years later, the Kubdya Khavis escapes from jail, he steals the dead evil doll Tatya Vinchu back to Baba Chamatkar. There Tatya Vinchu comes back to life but he needs a human body, but the target Lakshya is dead at this time. Then he gets the satisfaction to come back to life from the book Om Phat Swaha in Baba Chamatkar Mokshadham, according to which he tries to enter the body of the Lakshya's son but fails. Lakshya's son Aditya cuts off Tatya's head from body.[9][10]

Once Kothare went to the Puppetry show of Ramdas Padhye, the character was suggested to him[11] and then with Ashok Patole and Kothare decided to go to Dilip Prabhavalkar and cast for it. This was the first time that the Marathi audience had seen Prabhavalkar.[12]
Possible return[edit]
Mahesh Kothare announced 'Zapatlela 3' at an event in Mumbai.[13] Makers said that all the villains like Tatya Vinchu, Kudbya Khavis will be together.[14]

The popularity of Tatya Vinchu has endured. In 2020, at the height of the coronavirus pandemic in India, Tatya Vinchu took to YouTube to defeat a crisis that scared even him: COVID-19. At the suggestion of Padhye's son Satyajit, the family created a humorous PSA in which the Tatya Vinchu promoted social distancing, hand washing and wearing masks - and it quickly went viral. The Internet seems to favor him; Padhye has discovered, "In this age of social media, Tatya Vinchu is used as a meme on many social media websites. Even after 27 years, the character still has the same influence."[15][16][17]
In popular culture[edit]
In 2013, Sanjay Narvekar starrer 'Tatya Vinchu Lage Raho' (meaning: Tatya Vinchu keep it up) was a film based on the character of Tatya Vinchu, in which Ravi meets Tatya Vinchu, who helps him fight all the problems and crimes in the society.[18]
