Tawin Piran (born 1994) is a German-Kurdish systems engineer who contributed to the development and successful launch of the European Space Agency's Ariane 6 rocket.[1]
Early life
Piran was born in Bonn, Germany, in 1994 to Kurdish immigrant parents.[1] She has stated that she was fascinated by the mysteries of space from a young age.[1] To enter the aerospace industry, she completed a rigorous path of studying, internships, and trainee roles, noting that her background as a woman from an immigrant family presented unique societal barriers.[1]
Career
Piran serves as a systems engineer for the upper liquid propulsion module of the Ariane 6 launch vehicle.[1] This component acts as the second stage of the rocket, responsible for delivering payloads, such as satellites, into their specific target orbits after separation from the first stage.[1] Her responsibilities include ensuring that various subsystems remain functional under the extreme environments of spaceflight, including high and low temperatures, vibration, friction, and pressure.[1]
She participated in the inaugural flight of Ariane 6 in July 2024, a project described by ESA head Josef Aschbacher as a "historic day" for European autonomous space access.[1] Piran has highlighted the technical advancements of the Ariane 6 over its predecessor, Ariane 5, specifically the ability of the upper stage to re-ignite multiple times to perform a de-orbit burn, which prevents the creation of space debris.[1]
Advocacy
Piran is an advocate for women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics).[1] She has spoken publicly about her desire to use her career to fight stereotypes and inspire Kurdish girls to pursue engineering regardless of societal expectations.[1] She has also expressed an interest in contributing to a potential future Kurdish space project.[1]
