A taxonomic concept is part of the discipline of biological systematics being a description of what a taxonomic name refers to as stated by a particular author in a particular publication[1]

A taxonomic concept can be defined in terms of rules for appropriate use (an intensional definition), by a set of organisms included under the concept (an extensional definition), or by a mixture of these two approaches.

An intensional definition might be a reference to a synapomorphy (i.e. organisms with what is regarded as a monophyletic characteristic and all organisms derived therefrom). An example is a group of protists, the ||stramenopiles||, that have tripartite hairs attached to the flagella or body or are derived from organisms with such hairs. An intensional definition may refer to other charactersitics - such as a reference to those vertebrates that swim in the sea and have fins. Such a broad description risks embracing unrelated ||clades||. Ideally, a taxonomic concept will apply to a monophyletic and holophyletic clade. An extensional definition may be that of Vertebrates: as composed of fish, amphibia, reptiles, birds and mammals.

The same taxonomic concept may be referred to by more than one name, and identically spelled names may refer to more than one concept. In the latter case, the meanings of identically spelled names can be disambiguated by reference to the usage (Author and date of publication). This can be stated as 'Heterokontae' sensu Pascher 1914; 'Heterokonta' sec Copeland, 1958 or simply by the chresonym (name + author)., Heterokonta Luther 1899 (with or without a colon between name and author).
