Tayabas Western Academy (TWA) is a private, non-sectarian institution situated in Candelaria, Quezon. Iñigo Javier and Vicente Vilar co-founded the institution in 1928.[1] It is the oldest private educational institution in Candelaria, Quezon.
The institution currently offers preschool through college programs. It has a Senior High School (SHS) with Academic and Technical-Vocational-Livelihood (TVL) components. TWA offers degree programs in accounting, business administration, office administration, and teacher education for college students. Also available is a one-year General Clerical Course.
The Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education have fully accredited Tayabas Western Academy and its programs.[2][3]
History
The Tayabas Western Academy was founded in 1928 by the late Mr. Iñigo Javier with the aid of Mr. Vicente Vilar of Lopez, Quezon. This school was opened in June 1928 in a rented house at the corner of Cabuñag and Bustamante Streets, Candelaria, Tayabas (now Candelaria, Quezon). The enrolment then was only forty, composed of Freshmen and Sophomores. Vicente R. Vilar served as the First President of the board of trustees. In November 1931, Judge Severino B. de Gala was elected President of the board of trustees. That year, the TWA suffered a financial setback. For four months, the instructors were not paid their salaries while the school was under foreclosure for obligations long overdue. The permanent recognition of the school could not be granted by the office of the Private Education for lack of equipment. The school was under a critical condition.
At the close of SY 1931–1932, Mr. Honorio Montecillo was appointed School Director. He began to rehabilitate the school. The debts were paid, equipment acquired, and finally the permanent recognition of the General Secondary Course was granted. During this school year, the first Graduation Exercises was held for Class 1932. The History of TWA will not be complete without mentioning its services extended to the public from 1949 to 1954, a two-year Junior Normal Collegiate Course and a complete Elementary Course were offered during these years. In SY 1965–66, the school applied for the opening of college courses. In June 1967, the College Department was opened offering BSE, BSC, AB, and General Clerical Course. In 1972–73, the Night High School Department was opened. In 2014, the school graduated the last class of Night High School.
Tayabas Western Academy stopped operation for School Years 1989–1991. After two years, the school reopened in all levels to continue its services to the community. In 2009, TWA offered pre-elementary and Grade 1–2. The first Graduation for Elementary students after 1954 was celebrated in 2012. The founders and pillars of TWA gave us the gifts and legacies of quality education, respect for the educational processes, and the importance of punctuality. These admirable traits continue to be the brand of the school. TWA has been a constant in the community. The school is shaped by the minds and hearts of all who have walked its corridors.
Anyone in the TWA family is either a Brain, a Builder, or a Bearer. Competitions between the three organizations highlight the Foundation Anniversary Celebration in January. During the School Year 2016–2017, the Senior High School program opened under Government Permit (R-IVA) No. SHS-185, s. 2015 offering both the Academic Strands and a few specializations for the Technical-Vocational Courses.[4][5][6]
