Taylor Dumpson (born 1995 or 1996 (age 29–30)) is an American attorney[2] and 2021 President's Fellow at the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. She was targeted for hate crimes after she became the first Black woman president of the student government at American University, and responded to an online troll storm with a successful lawsuit.

Biography

At American University, she studied law and society,[3] and she was a member of the predominantly Black woman sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha.[3] In May 2017, she became the first Black woman to become student president at her college, American University.[4] On her first day, an anonymous perpetrator hung bananas from nooses around the campus in an apparent effort to target her as well as her predominantly Black sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha.[4] Approximately one hundred students attending American University felt that the university's administration had not responded adequately to the hate crime, and at a town meeting, they advocated for mandatory expulsion of persons caught committing such crimes on the campus.[5] She was notified four days later that the neo-Nazi web page called The Daily Stormer run by Andrew Anglin had targeted Dumpson by urging readers to conduct a troll storm against her, by posting anonymous insults and threats and hate messages on social media.[4] Anglin posted personal information about her on his website.[6] When she became aware of the scale of the online attacks, she initially became scared and "curled into a fetal position and rocked herself", and she later was diagnosed as suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.[7]

She decided upon legal action. Dumpson sued Anglin and The Daily Stormer as well as Evan James McCarty of Eugene, Oregon. In 2021, she won a $725,000 judgment against Anglin and the Daily Stormer for libel, invasion of privacy, inflicting emotional distress and intimidation.[8][6] The judge concluded that Dumpson was targeted because of her "race and gender".[6] Evan James McCarty agreed as part of the settlement to apologize to Dumpson and to renounce white supremacy.[1] In addition, one of the trolls apologized to her personally.[7] Daily Stormer founder Andrew Anglin has not yet responded to the lawsuit,[9] and no monies have been collected as of October 2021. The judgment set a precedent that persons harassed online can sue for damages, and win, in civil courts.[10] United States Assistant Attorney General, Kristen Clarke, cited Dumpson's courage in responding to the online hate attacks.[11] In 2021, she is a president's fellow at the Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, which is a DC-based organization that promotes civil rights.[4]
