Team Management Profile

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Team Management Index is a behavioral model that measures an individual's personal work and team preferences.  The Team Management Index and corresponding Team Management Profile were devised by authors Drs. Charles Margerison and Dick McCann after they met at the University of Queensland in the 1980s..[1]

The authors state the Team Management Index is not an indicator of personality but of work and team preference. The corresponding Team Management Profile was designed to have both high face validity and practical utility so that it can be used to improve individual and team performance across a broad range of applications[2]

Application and use[edit]

The Team Management Profile is a work specific measure which elicits self-report feedback about an individual's personal work preferences[1].  The responses given are analyzed to allocate a major and two related role preferences and provide a narrative-style Profile report.

The Team Management Profile amalgamates core concepts relating to individual work preferences and key success factors at work, to identify eight work preference styles–Explorer Promoter, Assessor Developer, Thruster Organizer, Concluder Producer, Controller Inspector, Upholder Maintainer, Reporter Advisor, Creator Innovator. A ninth activity, Linker, is described as the role all team members need to perform to create highly effective and efficient teams.

The Team Management Profile Questionnaire (TMPQ) is available in 27 languages while the Profile report is available in 14 languages[3]. Administration or processing of the profile questionnaires is via an online processing and administration system for individuals and facilitators (TMSProfiles.com).

Normative data is provided for comparative purposes in the Team Management Profile using an anonymized worldwide database[4] compiled at the Institute of Team Management Studies (ITMS). The worldwide research database for the Team Management Profile was reported in 2018[4] as consisting of 519,303 completed profile questionnaires in 25 languages with 81 industries and 295 professions represented across 202 countries.

Validity and reliability[edit]

Preliminary testing results[5] and the first full release[6] of validity and reliability data were reported by Margerison-McCann along with psychometrician, Rod Davies, while at the University of Queensland in the 1980s.  Since then a further four research updates have been released by Team Management Systems[7][8][9][10] each providing full reporting on the original research along with ongoing reliability (internal consistency, item analysis, test-retest), and validity (face validity, structural validity, criterion-related validity and construct validity) studies.

Independent research and evaluation[edit]

The British Psychological Society have conducted several independent reviews of the Team Management Profile (1995[11], 2000[12] and 2003[13]). In their 2003 updated review[13]] of the Team Management Profile, the British Psychological Society concluded that, “The strength of the test, from a practitioner viewpoint, is that the Team Management Profile has a high face validity with managers, the narrative Profile is easy to read and understand, and the documentation and feedback material is excellent.” The review also awarded the Team Management Profile adequate to excellent ratings[2] for all evaluation categories (Quality of documentation, Quality of materials, Norms and reference groups, Construct validity, Criterion-related validity, and Reliability – overall).

Comparative studies undertaken to compare the constructs of the Team Management Profile Questionnaire with other instruments have been conducted by external researchers and through joint projects. These include the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator® (MBTI®) assessment[14], Belbin®[15], the 16pf®[16], Emotional Intelligence[17], Work Aspect Preferences[18], and the Learning Styles Questionnaire[19]
