Technopolis refers to a geographical area or region that features several aspects of California's Silicon Valley. It is an effect an attempt by local, regional or national agencies to re-create a Silicon Valley environment to generate new business startups, technological advances, and investments. The core Silicon Valley features that characterize a technopolis are a concentration of major universities and colleges, substantial venture capital firms, effective logistical and communication networks, and an attractive and stimulating physical environment. Many attempts have been made by regions and nations to build a technolopis and one major U.S. construction company provided consulting services for this purpose. It remains questionable if a technopolis can be engineered and built, or whether the synergy necessary, even with the core characteristics of Silicon Valley, can be reproduced.
