Ted Tynan
Ted Tynan is a councillor on Cork City Council.[1] A long-term member of the Workers' Party,[2] Tynan first ran for election as an Official Sinn Féin candidate in 1977.[3] He was first elected as councillor in the 2009 Cork City Council election. In 2021, Tynan (the party's sole elected representative) was reportedly expelled from the Workers' Party at an extraordinary Ard Fhéis.[4]
Tynan describes himself as a socialist,[5][better source needed] and was jailed in 1991 for refusing to pay household waste disposal charges.[6] In 2017, Tynan was granted legal costs and a written apology by fellow councillor Terry Shannon after Shannon had accused Tynan of being antisemitic.[7] Tynan has engaged in local activism against illegal dumping,[8][9] has criticised the government's response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Ireland,[10] and complained about a lack of response to speed limit violations.[1] In 2016, Tynan established a book of condolences for Fidel Castro whose legacy he has praised.[11]
