Teen Cancer America (TCA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving cancer care for teens and young adults.[1][2] The 501(c)(3) was founded in 2012 by Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who.[2][3] TCA works to increase survival and improve the lives of adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with cancer by modifying health systems to better serve their needs.[4][5]
History
Following a decade of work with Teenage Cancer Trust in the United Kingdom, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend founded Teen Cancer America to expand similar support in the United States.[6][7]
Mission
In 2024, an estimated 84,100 adolescents and young adults were diagnosed with cancer in the United States, a number that continues to grow. Yet, most healthcare systems lack the infrastructure to fully address the medical and psychosocial needs of this population.[8] In a Forbes interview, Roger Daltrey emphasized the importance of providing cancer care specifically for this age group, distinct from pediatric or adult programs.[9] TCA provides young people with cancer access to age-appropriate, specialized programs, across the United States.[8][10]
Impact
As of 2026, TCA reported supporting 71 hospitals, reaching 43,950 patients, and awarding $14 million in hospital grants.[4]
Events and Partnerships
Teen Cancer America has been featured in national fundraising broadcasts such as the Stand Up to Cancer telethon, which included performances by The Who and appearances by supporters such as Dave Grohl.[11] The organization has also been highlighted in public television programming, including a KCET/PBS special promoting its mission and fundraising efforts.[12] TCA has also partnered with institutions such as the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.[13]
Ambassadors and Program Supporters
On her 20th birthday, Kylie Jenner donated a portion of Kylie Cosmetics proceeds to Teen Cancer America.[14] According to The Hollywood Reporter, actor Barry Watson and Alex Dvorak, writer and director of Bad Survivor, are both Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivors and serve as ambassadors for TCA.[15]
An event featuring Robert Plant, Roger Daltrey, and Dave Grohl raised nearly $2 million through live and silent auctions.[16] John Oates from Hall & Oates participates in the organization's Play It Back music program, in which AYA cancer patients write and produce music.[17][18] Oates released the single “Get Your Smile On,” with proceeds benefiting Teen Cancer America.[19]
