Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin is an upcoming action role-playing video game developed by Black Forest Games and published by THQ Nordic. Based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles characters created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, it is an adaptation of the comic book limited series The Last Ronin, co-written by Eastman and Laird alongside Tom Waltz. The narrative is set in a dystopian future where the Foot Clan has successfully seized control over New York City, and follows the journey of "The Last Ronin", a former Ninja Turtle who returns after several years of training to exact revenge on the organization for the death of his entire family, including his three brothers.
A video game adaptation of The Last Ronin was announced to be in development in March 2023 and formally unveiled that August. Its gameplay systems and structure will take particular inspiration from other AAA action-adventure titles such as God of War (2018). The last Turtle will be the game's sole playable character, while other supporting characters such as his brothers will primarily be depicted in flashback sequences.
The Last Ronin is set to be released for PlayStation 5, Windows and Xbox Series X/S.

Development[edit]
In March 2023, Paramount Global's Senior VP for Games & Emerging Media Doug Rosen, confirmed through entertainment news site Polygon that Nickelodeon had secured a publishing partner to develop a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video game that would directly adapt the comic book miniseries Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin (2020-21), co-written by the franchise's creators Peter Laird & Kevin Eastman with Tom Waltz, also a co-writer on the current comic series with IDW Publishing. Rosen confirmed that the game's narrative would be authentic to the story of the original graphic novel, and that the gameplay would take significant inspiration from other high-budget action-adventure titles such as Santa Monica Studio's God of War (2018). Rosen emphasized the importance of The Last Ronin as an example of targeting Turtles media to older audiences, in a similar vein to their inclusion of Shredder in a collaboration with Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II (2022), saying that it represented the multiple approaches to the franchise regarding age demographics and content. At the time of announcement, the publishing partner and developer for the game were not confirmed.[2][3]
The Last Ronin was officially revealed to be in development by Black Forest Games and published by THQ Nordic during their Digital Showcase event on August 11, 2023. The reveal coincided with the unveiling of concept art depicting the titular character fighting a horde of synthetic Foot ninjas akin to the graphic novel.[4] The game was confirmed to be releasing for PlayStation 5, Windows and Xbox Series X/S during the presentation.[5] In January 2024, Black Forest Games laid off 50% of their staff working on the game, significantly impacting its development timeline.[6]
