TemplateMonster is a digital marketplace of web design products and services, headquartered in the United States. The company was founded on May 24, 2002,[1]. As of 2019, the company has about 26,000 different products including web templates, themes, landing pages, graphics, presentations, plugins, and customizations.[2] According to Alexa, TemplateMonster is among the 3,500 most visited websites in the world.[3]

History

In 2002, TemplateMonster started with producing HTML, PSD and Flash website templates, as well as custom corporate style (for example, logo templates) that represented ready-made websites, allowing users to replace default content with text and graphics. [4]

In 2005, as E-Commerce websites gained popularity, TemplateMonster introduced custom online store templates built for Zen Cart and, later, for Magento, Prestashop, OpenCart and Virtuemart, allowing users to create a web store that includes product management, payment, shipping and other options.

Following the rapid evolution of content management systems (CMS), TemplateMonster added themes for WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal to its inventory starting in 2006.[5]

In 2008, TemplateMonster established a partnership with MotoCMS.com and started selling MotoCMS templates, based on a proprietary content management system. Founder of MotoCMS.com, Demetrio Fortmant, joined TemplateMonster as COO later.[6]

In 2013, Shopify themes and Wix templates, representing SaaS website solutions, were added to TemplateMonster’s inventory.

The TemplateMonster team released its first multipurpose WordPress theme, Monstroid, in 2016. Originally, the theme was based on the Cherry framework, a custom product from TemplateMonster’s production team. In early 2017, Monstroid 2 was released, and the original theme received a complete makeover. In 2018, Monstroid 2 was significantly updated, becoming compatible with the Elementor builder.[7]

In 2017, TemplateMonster changed its business model from a product company to a digital marketplace, inviting third-party authors to sell digital goods, not limited to web templates, but also including graphics, presentations and admin templates.[8]

In 2018, the TemplateMonster Loyalty Program was added, and according to it, a portion of a buyer’s payment was returned to the client account balance after the purchase.

In 2019, TemplateMonster introduced a subscription-based service, ONE, that allows downloading items under several subscription licenses.[9]

Criticism

Web templates produced by TemplateMonster are claimed to be easy to use for users with no coding skills; however, according to some reviews, extra programming skills may be required for making advanced modifications, while the complexity of a template also depends on the web platform it is based on.[10]
