Background[edit]
Tempura was created in 2019 by Emil Pacha Valencia, editor-in-chief, Clémence Fabre, art director, and Olivier Cohen de Timary, publishing director. The graphic design is carried out by Léa Marchet[1].
To enable the launch of the project, a crowdfunding campaign was inaugurated on December 3, 2019.[citation needed]
As an independent media, Tempura relies largely on its online pre-orders, before its distribution to news-stands, bookstores, and delivery.
The magazine is named after tempura, deep fried food originating in Portugal and imported to the archipelago in the 17th century. According to the editors, this link between the West and the East symbolizes the essence of the publication: "porosity of borders and cultures".
The team is aiming for a trilingual publication, including English and Japanese, thus expanding the market to the world[2].
Editorial line[edit]
Each issue explores, in 164 pages, the various facets of Japanese studies, through investigations, interviews, portraits, trend books and chronicles. The magazine claims a strong visual identity, favoring both content and form[2].
It leaves an important place to societal topics, such as the figure of the salaryman, the KuToo movement, the mob, Japanese bondage, love hotels, idols, and more generally the insular perception on family, sex, death, etc[2][3]
The magazine numbers several contributors (journalists, writers, anthropologists, sociologists, photographers...), both in France and in Japan. In addition, each issue features a wide-ranging interview with personalities such as journalist Shiori Itō, novelist Mieko Kawakami, director Sion Sono and member of the Académie française Dany Laferière[2]
