Early Life
Temwanani Mtonga was born on May 6, 1981 in Ndola, Copperbelt province. He is the son of Lillian Shirley Nyirongo (née Kaonga; 1953–), a nurse, and Mackson Nyirongo (July 6, 1948–), an aircraft engineer. He has five siblings.
As a boy, Mtonga was sent to live with his maternal aunt in Kitwe, Copperbelt. He moved frequently during his childhood, living in Lundazi, Luanshya, Lesotho, Livingstone, and finally Lusaka. When Mtonga was 16 years old, he had a spiritual rebirth. He then attended Lusaka Baptist Church, an independent reformed Baptist church.
Mtonga graduated high school in 1999. While in high school, he was an active member of the civic education club where he served as general secretary. He went to Chainama Hills College of Health Sciences where he studied Environmental Health.
Career
2000–2001: Early work
Mtonga worked as a casual worker at Zambia Bottlers Ltd, Malambo Rd, Industrial Area, and later as a bookbinder at BA Stationers and Printers Lumumba road, Lusaka.
2004–2011: MwaseMphangwe Zonal Rural Health
Beginning in 2004, Mtonga worked as an Environmental Health Technologist at Mwasemphangwe Zonal Health Centre in Lundazi district. Mtonga was active in coordinating child health immunisations, inspection of public premises, food safety inspections as well as supervising family and community health. Notable achievements during this period was closing the Mwasemphangwe local court due to insanitary conditions as well as organising community members in siting and eventual construction of Nkhanyu Health Post.
2011-2017: Kanyanga Mission Zonal Rural Health Centre
In September 2011, Mtonga was transferred to Kanyanga Mission Rural Health Centre in the same capacity as an Environmental Health Technologist.
