Teobaldo Power and Lugo-Viña (Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Tenerife, January 6 of 1848-Madrid, May 16 of 1884). Composer from Tenerife who is, among other works, author of the Cantos Canarios.
Biography[edit]
Descendant of Irish merchants and with a military father, Power stood out from a very young age for his extraordinary ability in front of the piano and as a composer. He was a child prodigy capable of surprising the intellectuals of the time. In 1858, he moved to Barcelona, where he was a disciple of the composer Gabriel Balart. Four years later, he moved to Paris to study piano music with Antoine François Marmontel and Harmony with Elwart, which he finished at just 18 years old. Since then, his meteoric career began that took him through Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Cuba, Madrid, Lisbon, Madeira, and Malaga.
Between these trips and due to his delicate health, he spent a season in his native Tenerife, specifically in the town of Las Mercedes (San Cristóbal de La Laguna), where he composed the Cantos Canarios, a transcendental and irreplaceable text music in Canarian culture, which includes fragments of the most famous popular airs of the Islands and adapts to classical music with great success. The premiere of this work occurred in August 1880, from which time it stands as a symbol of the musical identity of the Canary Islands.
In the year 1882, he presented himself, almost simultaneously, to the competitive examination as tenured professor of the National School of Music and Declamation of Madrid, and to that of 2nd Organist of the Royal Chapel. He got the two places that, at that time, were the two most coveted in the country. He died at just 36 years old suffering from tuberculosis, a premature death that befell him in the prime of his career.
