Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation (TIBI) is an independent interdisciplinary research institute that employs bioengineering and nanotechnology to develop medical devices and materials for therapeutic, diagnostic or patient monitoring applications. Located in Los Angeles, California, the institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that operates under the auspices of the Terasaki Family Foundation. Its facilities include three sites: one in West Los Angeles, one in Westwood, and a third in Woodland Hills.[1]

The Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation officially began in July 2020 with the support of the Terasaki family; support also comes from various grants and awards. Prior to its official launch, the institute operated as the Terasaki Research Institute and focused on transplant science and immunology. Its founder, Paul I. Terasaki, Ph.D., was a pioneering researcher in these fields. After TIBI was formed, the research pivoted to biomedical engineering, with transplant science included in its many applications. TIBI also incorporates UCLA’s Transplant Research and Education Center, which conducts research and provides educational resources, intervention, and support to kidney transplant patients.

In addition to its core faculty and staff, the institute has affiliated staff members and collaborators from various institutes; the institute also houses its own translational innovations facility at its West Los Angeles site.

The Terasaki Institute for Biomedical Innovation has five core faculty members who oversee teams of postdoctoral researchers who are grouped into three broad areas of research: Biomaterials Development, Tissue Engineering, and Organ-on-a-Chip/Biosensor Technology. The groups incorporate their interdisciplinary domains with “omics” knowledge to address the needs of individual patients.

In addition to the faculty and researchers at the institute, there are several affiliated scientists, clinicians, and other collaborators from various hospitals and other institutes. Among the collaborating organizations are Cedars Sinai Medical Center, Harvard University, University of Connecticut, the Mayo Clinic, CooperVision, Pharma Ther, Thermofisher, and UCLA.

The science teams and faculty operate under the umbrella of the institute’s executive team, headed by TIBI’s founding CEO and director, Ali Khademhosseini, Ph.D. The executive team is comprised of Executive Officers of the team’s Development, Financial, Operations and Innovations arms.
