Teresa Alfeld
Teresa Alfeld is a Canadian documentary and narrative writer and director. She is most known for her CBC documentary feature[1] Doug and the Slugs and Me (2022). Her films have screened at Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival[2][3] and Vancouver International Film Festival, and won several awards. Alfeld began making short films as a student at Templeton Secondary School in Vancouver. Her student film Closet Carnivore (2004) – a musical comedy – won Best Picture at the 2004 Vancouver Student Film Festival Awards.[4] Alfeld attended Simon Fraser University’s film program. Her graduation film Bunky the Vampire Killer (2010) screened at the Toronto Independent Film Festival and the Female Eye Film Festival. Alfeld’s debut documentary feature The Rankin File: Legacy of a Radical (2018), about Vancouver lawyer and socialist politician Harry Rankin, was produced by John Bolton and Opus 59 Films. Featuring appearances by Vancouver politicians Gordon Campbell, Libby Davies, Tim Louis, and Darlene Marzari, the film was selected as the opening night gala film[5] at DOXA Documentary Film Festival in Vancouver in 2018. The film made its broadcast debut[6] on Knowledge Network in 2019.
Alfeld’s second feature documentary Doug and the Slugs and Me was produced by John Bolton for CBC documentary Channel. A deeply personal documentary chronicling the rise and fall of Vancouver band Doug and the Slugs, the film was the closing night selection[7] at DOXA in 2022, and enjoyed a successful festival and theatrical run before making its broadcast premiere[8] on CBC documentary channel in 2022,[9] and CBC main channel and GEM in 2023.[10] Doug and the Slugs and Me was nominated for both Best BC Film and Best BC Director[11] at the Vancouver Film Critics Circle Awards in 2023, and for Best Documentary Sound[12] at the 2023 Canadian Screen Awards. It won the Audience Choice Award for best Canadian documentary[13] at the Available Light Film Festival. Alfeld has also written and directed several short comedies including[14] David Foster’s EGGGPAA, produced by the National Film Board and starring David Foster and Katharine McPhee.
Alfeld is a member of the Directors Guild of Canada and DOC Canada.
