Teresa Chan is a Canadian physician and academic who is best known for being the founding dean of the Toronto Metropolitan University School of Medicine.
Early Life and Education
Chan completed a Bachelor of Science with Honours in Immunology at the University of Toronto. She then decided to purse teaching, and earned a Bachelor of Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.[1] She then completed medical school at Western University. She also completed the RCPSC Emergency Medicine Training Program at McMaster University, a Masters of Health Professions Education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and a Masters of Business Administration at University of the People.[2]
Career
In 2013, after completing medical school and residency, she became an emergency medicine physician at Hamilton Health Sciences.[3] She started working at McMaster University where she became a Clinician Scientist with McMaster Education, Research, Innovation, and Theory (MERIT), and an associate professor of emergency medicine within their Department of Medicine. From 2018 to 2021. she was the program director for McMaster's Program for Faculty Development, Faculty Health Sciences.[2] From 2019 to 2021, Dr. Chan was the Assistant Dean for the Program for Faculty Development within the Faculty of Health Sciences. She also previously held the position of Associate Dean, Continuing Professional Development. While at McMaster, she published over 200 publications and held numerous leadership roles at the Canadian Association for Medical Education, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada.[2] She was also an honorary Adjunct Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. As of July 15, 2023, Chan has been serving as TMU's Dean of the School of Medicine, as well as their Vice-President, Medical Affairs.[1] As of July 2024, she continues to practice as an emergency physician at William Osler Health System Emergency Department.[4]
She also co-created the serious game GridLockedED, a game designed to simulate the chaotic working conditions of a hospital emergency department, in order to practice the problem-solving and communications skills to work in an emergency department.[5] [6]In 2017, she gave a TED talk on how non-scholarly experiences contributed to her expertise as a physician. [7]
Chan's research focuses on reforming Canadian medical education, through free open access medical education (FOAMed).[8] and making space for under-represented groups in medical school[3]. She also advocates for the reform of the Ontario healthcare system, often saying 'the sickest patient in Ontario right now is the system'[2]
