Termeh Kousha (born November 1982) is a Canadian mathematician and academic administrator. Since 2018, she has served as the executive director and corporate secretary of the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS), becoming the first and only woman to hold the position since the society’s founding in 1945. She is also an adjunct professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Ottawa. Kousha is known for expanding mathematics outreach in Canada through national competitions and summer camps. She is the youngest person ever named a Fellow of the CMS for her contributions to the Canadian mathematical community.[1]
Early life and education
Kousha was born in Tehran, Iran, in November 1982.[citation needed] She earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Tehran Polytechnic University (Amirkabir University of Technology) in 2004.[2] She then moved to Canada, completing a Master of Science in Mathematics in 2007 and a Ph.D. in Mathematics and Statistics in 2011 at the University of Ottawa. Her doctoral research focused on random matrix theory and its applications to probability and statistics.[2]
Career
From 2012 to 2014, Kousha held a postdoctoral fellowship at Health Canada under the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) Visiting Fellow program. She researched the health impacts of air pollution as part of the Environmental Health Science and Research Bureau. She also worked at Statistics Canada as a research scientist from 2013 to 2014.
In 2014, she became an assistant professor at the University of Ottawa. She taught in both official languages and served on the Faculty of Science's Committee on Academic Standing. She became an adjunct professor in 2018,[3] concurrent with her appointment as Executive Director of CMS.
Leadership at the Canadian Mathematical Society
Kousha has led major organizational initiatives since becoming Executive Director of the Canadian Mathematical Society in 2018. She oversees financial administration, program development, and strategic planning, and advocates for math education policy across Canada.
Competitions and programs
Since her tenure at CMS, Kousha has spearheaded several educational initiatives, such as:
- Canada Jay Mathematical Competition (CJMC): First launched as the Gray Jay Competition, renamed in 2022. Aimed at students in grades K–8, the CJMC is a 90-minute multiple-choice contest to build problem-solving skills.
- Canada Lynx Mathematical Competition (CLMC): Introduced in 2023, the CLMC is for students in grades 7–12 and includes real-time feedback and interactive problem-solving.
- CMS Day Camps: Launched in 2023 in Ottawa, the CMS Day Camps offer immersive math experiences for youth through games, projects, and guided exploration.
Governance roles
Kousha serves as Managing Editor of the CMS Publications Office and is an ex officio member of CMS committees including:
- Finance Committee
- Mathematical Competitions Committee
- Student Committee
- Publications Committee
She also serves on the editorial board of CMS Notes.
Her long-standing engagement with the CMS began in 2007 when she volunteered as a math camp instructor. She was named a Fellow of the CMS in 2022, [4] becoming the youngest recipient of the honour.
Research and publications
Kousha’s research spans theoretical and applied mathematics, particularly statistical modeling in environmental health. Notable peer-reviewed publications include:
- "Air pollution and emergency department visits for mental disorders among youth", Int. J. Environ. Res. Public Health (2020). doi:10.3390/ijerph17124190.
- "Air pollution and emergency department visits for respiratory diseases", Environmental Research (2018).
- "The accessibility of convex bodies and derandomization of the hit and run algorithm", Journal of Convex Analysis (2017).
Personal life
Kousha is married and has a son.[5] She resides in Ottawa, Ontario.
