Terrapin Logo is an educational computer programming language and software suite. The history of the platform encompasses both the original Terrapin company and Harvard Associates Inc.
Harvard Associates Inc
Located in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Harvard Associates Inc. has been doing business as (DBA) Terrapin with URL terrapinLogo.com since 1983. Terrapin offers the Logo computer language as their primary product, but also offers educational robots, educational curriculum, on-line emulators, and related tools and products.
Company History
In the late 1970s, the Logo language was developed with robot turtles at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This language was developed[1] for children, based on Piaget's theory of learning. Around 1979, Terrapin was founded. It licensed Logo and sold a computer language product implementing Logo for the Apple II computer[2] and later developed a new version for the Commodore 64.
Working with MIT, Terrapin commercialized a prototype robot that MIT developed, called a "Turtle" robot.
A small group of the Terrapin company employees left Terrapin around 1983 to form Harvard Associates Inc., which then developed Logo for the IBM PC (DOS) and eventually Microsoft Windows (MS-DOS). Both companies (Terrapin and Harvard Associates Inc.) sold Logo and related educational-focused products for different operating systems largely for schools and educational institutions.
In the late 1990s, Harvard Associates Inc. purchased Terrapin and offered Logo[3] and related products to a wider audience. Since then, Harvard Associates Inc. operating as Terrapin has continued to develop, enhance, and sell the Logo computer language and related products, along with a variety of turtle robots.
