Terence Albert James is an Australian politician who has served as mayor of Cairns since 2023.

Political career

James was first elected to Cairns City Council in 1994, serving until 1995. He was later elected from 1999 until 2008.[2]

At the 2012 local elections, James was elected to Division 4 on Cairns Regional Council with 55.84% of the vote after preferences.[3] After the elections, he was elected deputy mayor by a vote of fellow councillors.[2][4]

On 17 November 2023, Bob Manning announced he would resign as mayor with immediate effect. Days later, councillors voted for James to become mayor and serve the remainder of Manning's term.[5]

James gained national media attention in December 2023 amid Cyclone Jasper, which caused one fatality and very heavy rainfall in Far North Queensland.[6][7]
