Tetsuya Yamagami (山上 徹也, Yamagami Tetsuya) is a Japanese man who allegedly assassinated Shinzo Abe, on 8 July 2022. Yamagami, who allegedly used a homemade double-barreled gun masked with black duct tape to shoot Abe, was immediately wrestled to the ground and arrested by the Nara police. His apartment was later searched by a group of investigators who found more homemade guns.[2]
Motive

He allegedly confessed that he killed Abe because he believed that the former and longest-serving Japanese Prime Minister belonged to the Unification Church group that Yamagami did not like because he believed the group had made his mother bankrupt. He also allegedly confessed that he wanted to carry out this assassination before at another campaign event in Okayama but could not because there were too many entrance restrictions.[3]
According to his alleged confession to the Japanese Investigators, he carried out the assassination because he thought that Abe's grandfather and former Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi contributed to the expansion of the church so he allegedly hatched a plan to kill Abe who he believed was close to the church.
Events prior to the shooting
Yamagami had initially planned to kill Abe with explosives but his plan meant that he was supposed to be as close as possible to Abe who at a prior event would not have been accessible due to tight security. On the same day of the shooting, he arrived by train at the Yamato-Saidaiji Station in Nara. When police searched his car after the shooting, they found wooden boards with bullet holes; a sign to show that he premeditated to commit the shooting by practicing first at a shooting range.[4]
Work history
Yamagami was formerly part of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. Although at the time of this shooting, Yamagami was unemployed, a former senior work colleague confirmed in October 2020 Yamagami was employed at the freight department of one Kyoto factory. He worked well at that factory for the first six months until he started to neglect his duties sometimes absenting himself without notice.
Aftermath
Yamagami was immediately tackled by the Nara Prefectural Police who brought him down and into police custody to be held for suspicion of attempted murder which was later upgraded to murder when medical personnel could not save Abe. Following the incident, the police went on to search Yamagami's car and the house where they allegedly found more evidence pointing to premeditation to commit the crime. He is currently in police custody as this investigation is still in its infancy.
However, after the Japanese media widely reported Yamagami's relationship with the Unification Church, a petition was launched on Change.org demanding a reduced sentence for him.[5]
