ThaWave Podcast is a South Sudanese original music and entertainment Podcast hosted by media personalities ThaWave Entertainer and Jovial Cholie.[1][2]Created on the 20th of March 2022, it has featured a wide array of celebrity guests, including DJ Sonix,[3][4]Silver X, Mary Boyoi and many upcoming South Sudanese content creators and activists.[5]

History[edit]

The podcast began when ThaWave employed his friend Hakeem James (a self-taught videographer)[6] to help in filming and producing videos for his website then he discovered he could use his audio production skills to create a podcast. ThaWave started the podcast with his first talk show guest as the reknown East African sound Deejay DJ Sonix and this led to a serious wave of popularity for his podcast which he distributed on Spotify.[7]

As demands intensified from fans for more interactive sessions, the podcast introduced a video format for the podcast by live streaming to Facebook and YouTube.

Recently, ThaWave brought in fashion journalist Jovial Cholie as co-host for the podcast and the two have so far thrived well.

Format[edit]

There are at least three types of episodes as labelled on their website. These are the "main" general category, music lineups and countdowns, and the guest sessions that are streamed live on social media.[8]

Impact[edit]

In late April 2022, the podcast had over 10 thousand downloads only in South Sudan and by the end of May 2022, it has grown to over 50 thousand active downloads in over 17 countries.[9][10]

The Child Marriage Program[edit]

ThaWave Podcast recently created sensitization program dubbed "Give her a pen, not a man" which fights girl child marriages among the Sudanese communities both in South Sudan and Uganda.[11][12]

This program educates the general public on the laws against child marriage and the repercussions this has on the mental and physical status of these children and the program is believed to have sent over 15 girls back to school.

The podcast announced recently that they intend to collaborate with local national movements like Sawa Shabab to promote peace in the war torn South Sudan[13]

Reception[edit]

The podcast has been described as "a milestone for activism in South Sudan" by the UNMISS[11] and an important node for youth empowerment in East Africa[10]
