Thatharana (also spelled Thatharna) is a small hill station in Khanyara Valley, Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh. This is also known as Thatarana. The altitude of Thatharana is 2850m from sea level.
Etymology
Thatharana was named after a word meaning Shivering (tha-th-rana) because it is located 2850m from sea level.
History
Before 2019
Before 2019, no one knew about this hill station. Only Gaddis (local people) knew about this place because in monsoon they went up there with their animals like cows, goats and sheep for green grass. But later, in 2019, many people learned about this place due to its beauty. Thatharana has a brilliant 360 degrees view of Kangra valley and a thrilling route; it climbs up to be one of the best unexplored treks. Geography
Thatharana is located in Khanyara valley, Dharamshala, district Kangra, Himachal Pradesh at an altitude of 2850m.
The major towns near Thatharana are Dharamshala, Mcleodganj, Palampur, Kangra. Mcleodganj[1] is also called "Chota Lhasa" after the capital of Tibet. This is the home town of Dalai Lama. [2]
Transport
To reach Thatharana, you have three ways:
1. By Air – By air is the easiest way to come to Dharamshala. There is a direct flight from Delhi to Dharamshala and Jaipur to Dharamshala. Dharamshala has its airport in Gaggal, which is 25km far from Dharamshala.
2. By Bus- By bus is also a good way to come to Dharamshala. You can easily find buses from Delhi to Dharamshala, and it will take you around 10-12 hours. If you are coming from Chandigarh, then it will take you around 5-6 hours.
3. By train- If you are looking for cheap transportation, then this mode is good for you. There is no direct train for Dharamshala. You have to take a train from Delhi to Pathankot and then from Pathankot to Kangra.
Best time to come
The best and ideal time to go for Thatharana would be April to June and September to December as the chances of rain or snow are less, and the weather is very pleasant. Thatharana trek can be done throughout the year if you are an adventure lover. There is also a possibility for a snow trek to Thatharana in the months of January and March.
Things to carry
Shoes- If you are visiting it in Summers or in monsoon, be very cautious and wear shoes with a very good grip since that helps a lot to reduce the stress.
Stick- Now this is something that you may have underestimated, but a trekking pole or simple stick can help you a lot in travelling.
Clothes – You should be packed in warm thermals, lightweight sweaters and a very warm down coat. Try to wear warm lightweight layers than heavy wear.
Food and water – You should carry your own 1-2 litre water bottle since you won't find many water resources or shops on our way. There is only one point where you can top up your water bottle.
Torch, sunglasses and sun protection – Always carry a torch, sunglasses and suncream.
