The 2 AM Principle: Discover the Science of Adventure

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The 2 AM Principle: Discover the Science of Adventure is an award winning book written by human behavior scientist Jon Levy published by Regan Arts on November 8, 2016.[1] The book explores research on what causes people to live exciting lives and how this could be used to let people enjoy their lives more.[2] The book was received positively by media being featured in many major outlets. [3][4][5][6] In the book Levy combines personal stories with research and what he calls the EPIC Model of Adventure, a four-stage process that every adventure goes through. Research ranges from work by Nobel Laureate Daniel Kahneman exploring the Peak–end rule and how it relates to the memory of enjoyment, to risky behavior and its relationship to speed of thinning. [1]

Levy asserts that for an experience to be considered an adventure, it must meet three criteria:[7]

  1. It is exciting and remarkable;
  2. Possesses adversity and/or risk;
  3. Brings about growth;

His book breaks down and adventure into the following 4 stages:

Structure of The 2 AM Principle
Section Title Description
I Establish People put the right elements in place as to ensure the odds of enjoying their experiences are highest. This would include selecting a good team, a new location, a mission, and interesting constraints.[8]
II Push Boundries Since growth is essential for an adventure, people must expand their comfort zone and cross some kind of social, physical, or emotional boundary.[8]
III Increase People maximize the emotional value of the location they are in before moving on.[1]
IV Continue People define where to go next based on a set of criteria and begin the processes again, or end with style.
