The 57 Bus

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The 57 Bus by journalist Dashka Slater is a non-fiction narrative accounting of the attack on Sasha Fleischman on the 57 bus in Oakland, California. The book is an extended version of an article in the New York Times Magazine[1]. Like the article, the book uses interviews from both Fleischman and their attacker, Richard Thomas, depicting the events leading up to, and the aftermath of, Thomas' lighting Fleischman's kilt on fire.

Slater uses the book to discuss not only the crime itself but issues throughout the larger San Francisco Bay Area. Fleischman's half of the book covers their exploration of their non-binary gender identity and their recovery from the fire. Thomas' half of the book includes his struggles with income inequality, poverty, gang violence and restorative justice, eventually tracking his path through, and release from, the juvenile justice system.
