The Armies of Daylight is a 1983 novel by Barbara Hambly, and the third part of The Darwath Trilogy.

Plot summary[edit]

The Armies of Daylight is the third of a three part series of novels set in Darwath, a mystical realm located near to ours across the Void. In this novel, the wizard Ingold Inglorion and his two recruits from our world - Rudy Solis and Gil Patterson - try to find a way to save mankind from the Dark. A desperate attack is launched on the Nest of the Dark of Gae.

Chapter Outline[edit]

Chapter one: The wizards test a new cloaking spell. Preparations to scout the Nests of the Dark begin.

Chapter two: Goodbyes are said. Alwir threatens Rudy.

Chapter three: The mages enter Gae for reconnaissance. The tunnels of the Dark are mapped. Rudy has a fiery escape.

Chapter four: The decision is made to invade the nest at Gae.

Chapter five: Wend is brought to The Keep. Ingold discusses gnodyrr and the Master-Spells.

Chapter six: The Queen is hypnotized. Caves outside the keep are found. A new set of records is unlocked. Icefalcon returns.

Chapter seven: The army of Alketch arrives. Gil has a revelation about the rising of the Dark.

Chapter eight: Distrust and intrigue rises. Gil struggles to find proof to support her revelation.

Chapter nine: Tensions build. Conflict in the Council. Alwir's lie to Rudy is exposed.

Chapter ten: Alwir is not convinced by Gil's discovery. The Winter Feast celebrations begin. King Eldor returns.

Chapter eleven: The army makes for Gae. The King heads for death.

Chapter twelve: The army descends into the Vault. The trap is sprung. The King is wounded. Ingold is slain.

Chapter thirteen: The army retreats without hope to The Keep. The Inquisition comes for the mages. The King commutes death to banishment.

Chapter fourteen: Rudy is left in the keep while the mages are exiled. Tirkenson leaves the Keep in outrage. The Dark rise in Alketch. The imperial troops depart. Rudy is caught with Minalde

Chapter fifteen: Gil saves Rudy from death. Alwir comes for Rudy's head. Gil and Alwir duel and it is Gil who emerges triumphant. All the Dark are headed to Gae.

Chapter sixteen: Giovannin goes too far. Rudy fails to save the poisoned King. Rudy and Gil go to Gae to kill Ingold.

Chapter seventeen: Ingold rends the void, and the Dark pass through. The Dark are gone. Ingold tells his story, and admits his love for Gil.

Reception[edit]

Dave Langford reviewed The Time of the Dark for White Dwarf #67, and stated that "Cleverly anti-romantic touches make this a lot more appealing than you might expect from the cover or the chill news that it's volume 1 of a trilogy. Above average, I suppose."[1]
