The Balance is a personal finance website focused on making personal finance easy to understand for millennials.[1] It is owned by Dotdash, originally About.com, and was launched in August 2016. As of 2017 it was a top 10 personal finance website, reaching over 10 million monthly US unique users each month."[2][3]

History[edit]

The Balance was the second vertical site spun-off from About.com, an IAC-owned media company, which launched stand alone brands to make its content more organized, accessible, and contextually relevant.[1] Dotdash CEO explained "Nobody wants to get personal finance advice from the same site where they learned to bake a pie."[1] The Balance launched with 34,000 articles written by 70 experts, all organized under the topics of personal finance, investing, money hacks, career advice, and small business tips.[1] The Balance was preceded by Verywell, a health info website, and was soon followed by Lifewire, a technology information and advice website.[4]

In 2018, the website split into four sites: The Balance (the main domain) for personal finance and investing, The Balance Careers for career advice, The Balance Small Business for small business tips, and The Balance Everyday for deals.[5][6]

Traffic[edit]

The Balance launched with 6.5 million unique visitors in August 2016.[3] Traffic rose 65% six months after launch (August 2016 to February 2017).[7]

Awards and Recognition[edit]

The Balance won a Bronze Telly Award for General - Short Form / Social in 2017 for a Facebook video.[8]

It also won the EPpy Award for Best Business Blog with 1 million unique monthly visitors and over in 2017.[9]

In 2019 The Balance won The Communicator Award of Excellence for Websites - General-Financial Services.[10]
