Synopsis[edit]

The novel follows Antonina 'Nina' Beaulieu, a young woman who struggles to control her telekinetic powers, as she stays with her cousin, Gaétan Beaulieu and his calculating wife Valérie in the city of Loisail for the Grand Season and her debut into high society. Valérie appears to despise Nina and finds it impossible to make her an adequate 'Beautiful One' and to find her a suitable partner. The arrival of Hector Auvray, a talented telekinetic and performer, sparks a romance between Nina and the man who becomes her tutor, teaching her to hone her telekinetic powers. However, Hector is hiding a secret: he has come to Loisail to win back the love of Valérie, who ended their engagement ten years prior in order to marry Gaétan, who has extreme wealth, in order to save herself and her family from poverty. Hector begins to court Nina, who falls in love with him, as a way to become closer to Valérie, who continually avoids his advances.

During a visit to Nina's family home, Oldhouse, Nina kisses Hector and later writes him a letter declaring her love, which Valérie intercepts. She confronts Hector and the two share a passionate kiss, which Nina witnesses, causing her to despise both Hector and Valérie. However, she returns to Loisail for the Grand Season, continuing to living with her two great aunts and no longer courting Hector.
