The Bottlers
The Bottlers are a nine-piece folk-punk band from Sydney, established in 2013 by Matthew Black (vocals) and Ned McPhie (mandolin/banjo/mandola). They released a demo EP the year after, and a debut self-titled EP in 2017. The nine-piece band plays folk festivals and pub shows. Articles on The Bottlers frequently mention their Australian folk influences and punk energy.[1].
History
Matthew Black and Ned McPhie began collaborating in 2013. Black had an early exposure to traditional Irish music, and McPhie has a background in screen music composition[2]. The band released a demo EP the following year.
Gigs were infrequent in the years following, but the band has toured regularly, including at several folk festivals, since releasing their self-titled EP. The event took place at Oktoberwest, on October 22, and also launched The Bottlers’ signature beer, Hades’ Ale, through Willie The Boatman brewery[3].
This was followed by the band’s “first proper interstate trek” on Australia’s east coast.
The Bottlers cite a variety of influences, including Redgum, John Williamson, The Dubliners, Goanna, Planxty, The Pogues, Billy Bragg, The Furey's and Davey Arthur, Warumpi Band, Dropkick Murphys, Midnight Oil[4]
The band’s line-up, described as its “menagerie of members” has grown to nine contributors and includes fiddle, accordion, tin whistle, guitars, drum, bass, banjo, mandolin and lagerphone.
