Background
The Brazilian Consolidated PBY-5 Catalina was on route from Miami to Philadelphia to pick up a new navy plane [2]
Accident
During the flight to Philadelphia Pennsylvania, a heavy thunderstorm was building over burgaw and the plane traveled into a thunder cloud and the plane exploded in the sky and the plane crashed just outside of burgaw [3]
Aftermath
The first person on the scene of the accident was state trooper W. M. Whitley around 3:15 pm in the afternoon. shortly after the crash Crash equipment and emergency personnel arrived from Bluethenthal (now, the Wilmington airport), Cherry Point and Camp Lejeune but all 8 occupants on the plane, died from the crash including one American and the bodies were unrecognizable[4]
On July 7, 1945 a military funeral was given for the seven Brazilians, who died in the crash and they were given full honors[5]
The American who died was named Dominic Naz-zacaro he was a sailor mechanic[6]
