The Caribbean Sail is an adventure strategy game with roguelike elements about sailing across the Atlantic Ocean to Nassau in the 1700s, independently developed by Victorian Clambake.[1]
The game evokes a retro feel with an 8-bit art style and soundtrack. It also draws inspiration from The Oregon Trail. [2]
Gameplay
The gameplay is mouse-driven and based around resource management and decision making with occasional arcade-style minigames such as harpoon fishing, naval combat and Liar's dice. The player begins by naming their five crew members and then selecting an occupation, purchasing a ship, then buying supplies before setting sail. Each occupation offers the player a different amount of starting currency, score multiplier, and unique skill. Most of the ships are locked at the beginning of the game and are unlocked through XP gained equal to the player’s score on successfully reaching Nassau. The player can purchase sails, harpoons, food, luxuries, cannons, ammunition, and unique items before setting sail. After setting sail, the player can set rations for their crew, go harpoon fishing, and check their logbook anytime. While sailing, the player is faced with random bouts of disease, reefs, ships, storms, and other events. The flag of the player ship can be changed with another nation’s flag in order to fool enemies into letting them board or take first strike in naval battle. If the Captain dies along the voyage, the player can leave a message in a bottle that other players may encounter on their voyage. If the Captain survives the voyage, their name and high score are uploaded to an online global leader board.[3][2]
Development
The first version of The Caribbean Sail was completed in two weeks by Evan Massie in January 2017.[4] In the next two months, Victorian Clambake was founded by the developer as a publishing name and website for retail sale. The game was posted to Steam Greenlight on March 23rd, 2017 and Greenlit on June 7th, 2017.[5] Development continued through its official Steam release on September 19th, 2017. Since release, the game has had content patches weekly in preparation of two free expansions.[1]
